Talking The power of connections in getting you into residency!

We keep hearing that connections play a role in your application and being accepted, I know some one with poor scores and very old matched in a program. But I want to know how much a contact can help ? can it help you to get matched with whatever scores you have or USCE? we need more discussions and examples you know personally about it.
and how much does it help ?

In general contacts may ruin your chances, except if the contact was directly a faculty/internist..
PDs usually hate when residents come in with aamc ID of applicants they know unless they have extraordinary profile. PDs like to see their residency working in its optimal level rather than hiring people who might get into troubles. Sometimes PDs may ask the chief residents or other residents if they know good candidates, in this case you can ask your friends who already matched for a favour.

Goodluck

I disagree with ApplicantGuide.

I have heard of many IMG getting into good programs bcos of connections.
There are so many good candidates around and connections will give u an edge. Why do u think certain programs always accept candidates from a certain overseas uni (e.g. Aga Khan)
If you have connections, it is definitely a bonus...
One's application may be retrieved from the wastepaper basket bcos of connections. Many ppl get USCE bcos of connections.

Don't discount the power of connections. To think that connections does not play a part is naiive...

I wish I have connections but i have none!

When I was doing observership in the hospital I was told that PD rather hire someone that gets along with the residents and known to be a good person than hiring someone with just a high score... High score is not everything, your way communication with others .. speaking clear English and being a caring honest person is waaaay more important than high scores..

Warning!

Connections is everything in the doctors society in USA. If someone you know has real good connections with PD or any powerful person in the selection committee, then you are in, no matter what scores you have or how weak is your profile.

I've seen this multiple times across all specialties and in all the states.

Most of married people do this; one of them gets in and then the other spouse join next year, can you tell me how they do that? It's the connections ....

@Leftose
I would disagree with you to some extent
Although i also heard contacts might help to some extent but regarding Agha khan candidates, look at their CV and you will see 260+ scores with lots of other stuff like publications, research and what not. Who would not like to have such applicants??
And by the way i am not from Agha khan

connections are one of the MAJOR factors.it does help but surely its NOT the only thing...candidates with connections dont have to go thru the ordeal as they almost know their fate...but otherwise good candidate i.e good scores, usce, research publications also land in good programs regardless of contacts..its pure luckl!

Who will define nice person? You? Well definition of nice person varies from person to person. As far as english is concerned,i dont think they want perfect american accent english (as english is not mothertongue of most IMGs) and the one who can pass Step 2 cs english proficiency part must be knowing english clearly .Right??
If only speaking english was the criteria, i would have loved to quit studying and start taking english classes.hehehe .No offence
