Default IM: Non-Caribbean, Non-Citizen/GC, YOG> 3 yr IMG Thread 2015

Lets start a new IM application thread for this category.

Reason behind is:

Non-Caribbean, Non-Citizen/GC, YOG> 3 yr are all a special and extreme [often neglected] minority group.

Comparing apples and oranges is not fair.

So only Non-Caribbean, Non-Citizen/GC, YOG> 3 yr IMG people share your experience.

---
For me I applied >150 Programs in IM and no interview yet.

This tread not meant to replace the main residency application thread. It is just sister thread.

Just got a rejection from Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore.

Wishing all the best to everyone.

I just think it'd be hard to keep up with so many threads. Why not keep everything in one place?

This is not an essential thread. Just to gather people with similar situations.
Multiple threads will keep us busy and the time will pass quickly. lol

You should also post your credentials. i.e scores.
And post in the other thread as well. We have a running post of everyone's stats as well as their interviews. If you want to be a part of that.

I understand where circles is coming from, but like dr88 said, everyone already have their visa status listed in main thread which at some level renders this one obsolete.
I do acknowledge the fact that not everyone has listed if they are a carib or or non-carib grad. This brings me to the question i have... i thought all non-AMG's are under the same category. What are the differences between the two sub-categories... apart from the location.

Crazy good stats. You must have a few invites by now from the programs who dont have a YOG cut off limit.

1. Caribbean IMG are AMG equivalent.
2. Many programs do not want to spend money for Visa [H1] so Citizen and GC are different too.

False. Oh how i wish that was true. Not all Carib grads are US citizen/GC holders/PR ... If anything, a good majority are canadian requiring visas, be it may a J1 or H1, but requiring them none the less.

Preference in my guesstimate:

AMG>Carribian IMG [Many do their clerkship in US]> Citizen/GC IMG>Orphan [like us] IMG.

This thread is again just a sister thread of the main thread here..

Well everyone has their own speculations regarding this matter. Who knows, maybe yours are correct. But, it all boils down to each program's own preference. I wish there was a clear cut generalization which was true and set in stone... but since their isn't, your guess work is just as good as anybody else's.
Good news: some people will kill to have stats like yours, and a research on CV. I understand that yog is a bit of a hindrance in your case, but just wait buddy... lots of programs who dont give a crap about yog will be interested in you. Your time is coming
Good luck.

That is the supporting spirit we are looking for in this thread.

Carribean IMGs are not AMG equivalent....
US/Canadian graduates are considered top of the list.
Everyone else is in the same boat barring visa requiring issues and programs who do not sponsor them.
Some carib students do their rotations in the US, they are still IMGs. A lot of IMGs do their electives in the US as well. Again, same boat.
A couple of years ago, carib grads were considered on the same level, but recently IMGs are IMGs, doesn't matter if you went to caribbean or nigeria.
Being a US citizen is a plus.

@Circles keep the spirits up, your cred.s are great, I am sure just as you are. I know that not having IVs till now is worrisome. but man the problem is that the programs are not sending rejections neither. something is wrong, the process is so much damn slow!!! I heard from experts that the IVs and rejs start to be heavy from the second half of Oct to the second half of Nov. after that one should worry, I hope at that time we all get 10+ IVs. just let us pray!
one q did u include in ur PS how did u spend the time from YOG?

Actually there are a lot of programs that consider true IMGs > Carib

Agree but US rotation comes as a package:
1. Hands of US clinical experience
2. LORs for US clinicians [if not from PDs].
3. No time wasting, hence their YOG is typically <1-2 years.
All those make them more competitive than orphan IMG who spent at least 3-5 years before they can come to USA after finishing the internships in home country and travel/getting access to USA.

This thread is again a sister thread, not meant to replace the original.

Lets just gather few similar applicants with similar situations. It will be also good if we have any interview in future, we can practice mock interview together too.

Wishing you all the best!

^Thats not true. My med school 9In Pakistan) gave us two months during fourth and final year and then two months again during final exams and convocation.
People did their rotations here in US in that time. I have 3 months USCE and I only graduated 8 months ago.
I think a carib grad doing a rotation here is the same as any other IMG doing a rotation here, as I have had friends who have done them. It doesn't always take 5 years.

Let's not call people ' orphan IMGs ' ; that doesn't sound very nice I think :/

Yes it did. I did either some clinical jobs or research. No "Gaps" in CV

To how many programs should one apply? Being non US Citizen? Is applying around November-December not recommended? Or should someone just wait to the next match year ?

"Orphan IMG" was an poetic expression! Do not take it seriously! lol

Again this thread for older IMG. I am not here is discredit anybody or anything. This is just a gathering place for people with similar situation as the title say "IM: Non-Caribbean, Non-Citizen/GC, YOG> 3 yr IMG Thread 2015"

I get what you are feeling circles.. after all the hard work and effort.. I too realize that YOG seems to matter more than scores alone. The university program might be more picky on YOG. But the community ones should be more forgiving about this..

So IMO, we just have to accept that as older grads, our chances to get to univ progs are slim, regardless of the score. I'm also 2009 grad. Almost expired by US criteria. I am learning to let go not getting IV from univ. As long as I match to a program with good teaching, I would be fine with it.

One question, how many years how you been out from medical practice? As this may play a role too. Do you have any USCE?

I have 5 mo of USCE at clinics in 2014. After graduation, I did clinical jobs for 5 years in my home country. Last five years I am doing research.

YOG is killing me!

thanks IMlover!

I think with your credentials you stand a great chance with community hospitals. Maybe they are putting us on hold because of the YOG. Peak season for IMG was said to be mid Oct to late Nov.

Hang in there mate! Consider to write the program you really interested in. Who knows if they are placing you on hold they might grant you IV when they see that you are interested.

All the best!!

I can't believe people with such amazing credentials are worried about interviews..I thought all you needed was good scores..Then again, there's always that one thing we all lack in our application..I don't think YOG is a deal breaker..I think you guys will still get great interviews.
