You can register NRMP anytime before November, there's no need to be in a hurry about it.

You can even register with NRMP after November but they'll take more fees.

As for California letter, I don't think you have time for it. It takes at least 4-6 months to be processed.

@Sabio, I have same concern. I try to apply for the California letter now. It said we can use the receipt notice as a temporary document to ERAS. Do you know how long does it actually take to have that receipt notice?

I intend to ask my medical school to send the receipt notice electronically to ERAS so maybe it doesn't take much time.

Btw, it's late July now. Do you think I really can't make it for the letter to come in by the time of interview? All my LoRs are in CA but until now that I know the California letter. It's really disappointed if I can't apply in CA just because of this. Can you help me out?...

It takes about 4 to 6 weeks until you get the receipt. For more information please read here
http://www.usmle-forums.com/residenc...how-apply.html

The receipt is not sent by your college. It will be sent from the Medical Board of California to your mailing address and then you upload it in your ERAS as a letter of recommendation.

I'd say about 50% of IMG friendly California programs are not satisfied by the receipt, they still want the full the letter. However, sending them the receipt is a good temporizing measure.

Thanks for your quick reply, Sabio. I also find your link is very useful!

When I have that receipt, is it right that I have to attach it with a dsf and mail them to ECFMG? Do you know how long does it take from the day I mail to the day it is uploaded in ERAS? Do you think I should still shoot my application to CA programs in early Sept. or wait until it's uploaded?

Besides the Dean's letter and medical transcript, do you think I should ask my college send some of my documents (proof of social activities, rewards, certificates...) via electronic way to ECFMG so it won't take much time?

Besides Dean's letter, medical transcript, LoRs, California letter, is there anything about the application that you recommend me do as soon as possible because of the long "waiting" time? I'm a bit scared and confused.

Thanks for your information. I really appreciate.

Yes, you deal with California letter just like any other LoR.

Usually it takes 2-3 weeks from the time you send the LoR until it uploads in ERAS.

California programs usually start looking at applications in late October, so there's no harm in waiting until the letter is uploaded.

Your college should not send any other extra documents (other than the required Diploma/Transcript/Form186/Verification), your application will be rejected if they do.

I can't of anything else to recommend you at this point.

Dear Sabio,

I've just received via email a letter looks like this
https://www2.mbc.ca.gov/WAAS/images/...ivedLetter.jpg

Seems like it's just a welcome letter with tracking number, not a receipt....

Can I use it to submit while waiting for PTAL?

Yes! Send the receipt letter to be uploaded as one of your reco letters. If you look on the document submission for there are 2 options regarding Cslufornia letter.

One states that it is a California letter, the other says receipt for California letter or something to that effect. You can replace your current letter with the official one later.

I have done this as well. I got my California letter within a month and half. Seriously!!!!

I will be honest, the reason why it takes mobths for some is lack of documents or delayed sending. If the board receives your application, fingerprints and medical school transcripts in a timely manner, you will get your letter fast.

Apply for the PTAL. Its not too late. Even without documents and just the application, you will get a receipt notice which you may upload as a reco. Please refer to the document suvmisdion form options regarding the same

HI, i can see that you have a lot of information about ptal. i wanted to apply for a ptal too. so do we need 128 hours of psychiatry??for ptal. i have done mbbs in india and i sure do have 2 weeks + 2weeks in internship for psychiatry.but my transcripts has shown only 36 hrs in my final yr transcript. my college transcript does not mention anything abt internship.even i f i add it up i think it wont sum up. so wat should i do????let me know how u did it. i dont think my college is going to accept 1 week as 32 hours. cos in our clinical years our clinics were only for 3 hrs per day ie 18 hrs per week.
