Program Directors Traveling in the interview season

Fellow applicants

I thought I'd write this post to share ideas regarding traveling during the season. I guess we are all aware of the costs of transportation, accommodation, meals, etc that we need to consider, and the more interviews (which is cool), the more the costs

So one obvious strategy is to try to schedule interviews as close to each other as possible (in time and place), and book your way from one to the other, however
1- it's not always possible to have the dates you want in the places you want
2- there's always gonna be weekends ! so you will be doing IV A on Wednesday/Thursday and then IV B is next Monday (at least), and so on ... these three or four days, where do you intend to spend them?

For example, I have relatives in the US that I can visit and stay with, but it's not always convenient to keep going back and forth, so I'm between spending money on flights or spending money on hotels!

Another issue is that many programs are close to a small rather than major airports, which makes flights there less frequent, more expensive and usually with 1 or 2 stops.

One alternative to flying is taking buses, which can be great if you are lucky to schedule 2 or 3 IVs in close proximity to each other (especially true for the east coast and the northeast). They are cheaper, but you'll get tired

I know I'm all over the place. Just trying to say what I'm thinking of. This is intended for discussion and sharing of experience so we may all get the benefit

Cheers and good luck

True words meddoc90, its not gonna be super cheap travelling and lodging. I would like to add that a few sites which I find super useful to plan everything are:

kayak, rome2rio, and amtrak (especially East Coast like OP said)

And yeah if you have a few days in between and wanna save money, rather than a flight look for a bus or train.

Best of Luck to everyone this interview season!

God bless the programs which offer hotels and transportation for their invited candidates.

South West Airlines seems to have cheaper fares...they let you check in bags for free...Also no fees for changing flights...you can look into them....you need to go directly to their web site since they don't show up on kayak.

Sign up for frequent flyer programs and hotel programs...lot of travel and hotel stays, you can accumulate a lot of points...
