Default General Surgery match

Hi everybody!
I have just reviewed a number of General Surgery match posts on this forum. It is obviously not easy to get there (even to prelim).
I am just thinking of whether or not it is worth preparing to USMLE. If I do that I will need to invest significant amount of money into USCE after that.
But even if I become USMLE star and spend significant money on USCE do I still have very small chances of getting to General Surgery as I am an old graduate (2005) and do not have any US visa?
In other words has it ever happened that really good USMLE scores + USCE outweighed “old” YOG status + “visa required” status?
If such things are happening from time to time are they happening with really really really good LORs or with a few not so significant LORs only? Could you please bring real examples?
Thank you so much

Default personal desire

Commitment to your dreams is something that people cannot judge or comment on. You should figure out if you are willing to undergo the process the endless studying, the long nights and the self doubt caused by the whole process. I havnt reached my dreams yet but i will continue because they are my passion. I hope that you pursue your passions and in some years you will look back and be confortable saying that you did everything you could.

good luck my friend, and I hope that you take time to reflect on your goals and dreams

Hi there. Don't know of examples, but what I can tell you is that you must do everything you can. Certainly don't expect to match in a top Program, but you certainly have chances. Try to Acheive Top Scores, USCE and you'll be there fighting. Work hard! Making connections is really important and many times overweigh other things. Good luck!
