HI, just do it, don't waste more time if you haven't sent your documents yet. Your no need for visa will help you much.

Arrow Complete profile is important.

If you apply with Step 1 and CS only, there's a risk that your application get filtered out by program coordinators.

I suggest you go get your documents ready, but do not apply until you get the CK results even if that means mid or late September. This way you'll avoid that filter.

Default Take your chance

The benefit of taking a chance this year outweighs the disadvantage of being repeat applicant next year by far.

So go ahead and take a chance, apply in September, don't wait for the CK results. I thought you'll get the CK results in September, but since it's going to be too late anyway, then take your chance and apply in September.

I think that applications beyond the third week of September will be jeopardized, therefore I suggest you apply before completing your profile.
It's difficult to say, that's just my opinion.

Sabio and Steptaker, thanks a ton for your feedback!

Coco, i find myself in a similar situation and am probably looking to complete my profile by late october/early november. Speaking to a large number of people around, me being an IMG, most are of the opinion that its prob not a very good shot for this year. I've had the same doubt about whether being a repeat applicant majorly hinders my application the next year, and the answers are all over the place. good to hear from some reliable sources as well. The way I see it, I'm prob going to get my stuff in order and wait for my step 1 score to come in. if its decent, ill do the applying on the 1st September thing, and send emails out to some programs about my profile being complete. And pray real hard!

A question which I have in mind is, does it improve our chances to apply wide with a deficient profile or would that be a waste?
Most people I have spoken to suggest applying for 80-100 programs in the hope of 5-10 interviews or more if lucky. But those most people have had complete profiles and great scores! What would be a good figure to aim at? I'm only looking for an IM residency, but will apply to a few paeds programs as well!

thanks a ton!

hey, yeah im applying this year as well. I only have cs as yet but will have my step score by mid august. (hopefully!) I honestly have no clue about what to do, am as confused but still want to give it a try, who knows what freak luck some people have might rub off. I recently met someone who matched after the scramble, or the position was offered after it due to one of the accepted applicants failing to get a visa (sad.). So who knows. Am only going to apply for medicine, though might apply to a few peds as alternative. I'm thinking of applying to about a 100 programs...whats your plan like?
this forum is so great, have had a wonderful time here for the step1 and even the match so far!

I talked to Conrad Fischer (he used to be a PD) during my CK live lecture, he told me that if you had a very good score for step 1, do not wait for your CK score, apply early September.

@harlesmd

What is a good score as per the current competition? Will any 99 do or only high 99s are considered good scores?

He didn't mention a specific number but I assume anything above 250 will be good

What are your scores? I advice you to apply to at least 60-80 IM.

ya, maybe you have to go up on your IM programs, make sure you pick up IMG friendly programs. Don't stress much on peds if you don't have previous experience.

Default So I'm not alone...

Y'all are my kinda people. I thought I was the only crazy person applying with step 1 and CS...unlike many here though... I won't take CK until the end of the year so no chance for me to update the score in September or even the next month. I'm just gonna jump in and see what happens.
But I'm still not finding an answer to the question of whether being a repeat applicant for the following match will be held against you. Any idea?

Actually, given the situation I'm in (old grad + no CK + no ECFMG certification) .. I will only apply to local areas here and there.. I'm not gonna go too crazy on this because I know I will be filtered out so this will be pretty much like a roll of dice for me, win or lose. The odds are against me at the moment and later too (since I'm an old grad)..but I do want to experience this whole Match crap and see what the fuss is about. Yeah... definitely fuss ! As far as how I'm finding programs... I am selectively looking those up on the net. But if you wanna apply widely, then I suggest you hook up with some residency agency to help you with an IMG friendly list, since you're investing a lot of money into this.
