Hi
prelim is only PGY-1 while categorical is pgy-1 + whatever other years 2,3,4...

there are some programs you will notice in eras start as pgy2 in 2013 ie you will apply now and if matched you will start after 2 years, meantime you have to match with a prelim ie PGY1 program which start 2012.

if you matched prelim alone then you have to apply again next year for pgy2 starting programs, or you may also apply to categorical programs.

Many people who do prelims will get offers from their PDs to be promoted to categorical pgy2 or categorical pgy1 next year.

IM primary care is similar to categorical but with more ambulatory rotations. The graduates of these progams can match in any fellowship same way to the categorical people. Take a look at this site Graduates of Primary care program.
