They are all usual doctors! they don't need any rehearsed speech. You just need to have enoigh personality charisma and excitement to have a conversation with a stranger who can become your mentor and colleague.

only thing I would make sure before interview is have your short story ready: who are you where are y from what you did and what you are going to do.

be prepared for the questions that you have to yourself and that you know is a question in your CV. have enough questions for everyone everything ask same questions, listen to same answers but you ll be amazed how many times you will be asked if you have any questions and the thing is no matter even if you ask simplest thing to a resident: "Would you choose this program again?" he/she will start long talk and say whatever she wants to say, they want to share and show there hospital their experience, so just let them speak. "Tell me more about this floor about the nurses about your routine day.. etc.. just ask ask ask questions.

Be yourself, totally honest, extrovert, funny, make jokes, make them smile. no need to be anecdotal just make a flow in the conversation, I even presented case on the morning round, and answered qs that interns could not. just be free, not stupidly self confident but show them that you can make a wonderful symbiosis with american grads. american doctors. that you appreciate their path, which is not easy at all. That you are here not as an enemy, that you will bring something to them. that they will be fortunate to have you there. Be very honest, honesty is the key, tell them how you learned from the obstacles in your career and how "YOU MADE MOST OUT OF IT" that you are coachable, that you are a good listener self sacrificing team member, and just simply a wonderful person to work with.
I search and read lot of IV notes i.e. answers to specific questions but mostly I think you should just write your thoughts about yourself just like personal statement and your the phrases ideas, inputs that you have in your statement. they may not even have taken a glance at your application.

If PD is IMG tell them your story and mention that you and other foreign grads all have similar stories verbalize your thoughts your concerns in a positive thoughtful way.

Talk about your kids, your family parents especially if you are from a doctor's family. whoever scared us not to mention that we are from family of doctors was very very wrong. This is your background this is in your blood, they like it.

They will be the ones who will have simple conversation with you simple topics, for some of them it is in a same way obligation to interview you as for you to be interviewed there.

and before interview social dinner with residents, don't believe those who say residents are spied of PD. They are one family, you should be afraid of them if you area a cheater, betrayer or you wanna bring something bad to that family, otherwise they will just welcome you will whole heart. use the moment and show them your personal personality.
Tell everyone the things that you usually desperately tell and chat with your closet friends, the moment when you desperately try to let them know the reasons why you deserve to match, why you are a good applicant, why you are not worse than others even though you have this this and that problem, but you can do it.. I'm sure you all have that moment.

If you can keep open and interesting conversation you will be surprised by the different types of interviewers and what they will tell you. if you are honest they will be even more honest.

Be simply a person, no matter what specialty, what type of interview what is your medical knowledge hoe many grads you are, if you are attractive to them, and if you are there, you can be at the level of any other type of graduates and act even better.

I felt very sad when I saw how self assured and artificially obliged some foreign country (will not specify cause i really appreciate that race of people) AMGs acted on interview those who have done rotations in that program and who knew everyone, on any extra outside interview activity they were like: ahh do i have to do this, ooh mmhhh" and you could clearly see the compulsory movements of face and each action.

When I honestly stated: "Thank you for having me hear on interview ,I know this is not the place where lot of IMGs are invited" i received answer: "Yes you are right but your case was unique".. and yes I do spoke about Stalin with PD.

If you are scared of sharing your life thoughts and emotions with not very well known to you people work on it.

Lot of my friends tell me not to even try for lay people to understand the path that we are going on, why no one understand why do we even go on interviews and what is it so important and when you come back form interview why you are not starting to work there if they liked you that much.. but believe me the effort I am putting to make them understand what's going on and all the texts I am using during those conversations are the ones who help me and come on my mind on interview.

I don't know what else to say guys. I have some really nice notes, collections of some other notes lot of questions, which i try to read even on the way by taxi because you really never have any question in your mind once you are in there. if you want to read em PM me yr email. they are personal indeed but believe me I am reading interviews for any specialty from any person, any notes any sentences any ideas are very helpful because in the end of the day it comes down to that how interesting your two phrases are and how much energy and excitement you have left once all the interviewees are starting complaining about how their heels hurt their legs and how hungry they are when you have not even taken a peace of candy.

Hi Tamta can you please email me your interview notes as well? Meadows28@hotmail.com

Secondly, are you sure we should start emailing programs right now to express interest or should I wait another week or two? Thank you and God bless!

Default Pending CS and emailing programs

I can tell you that i got two interviews on the day I got my CS results and 4 more in the previous week after updating all the programs.
and yes It affected my application but i risked and it worked out. Now what I am breaking my mind on is to choose between prematch program and another good program where I am sure I will be ranked high.

If i had listened to everyone who did not recommend me to apply i would loose chances of at list interviewing at 10 spots. I am very happy. now that my decisions are correct. i have read previous year experience of a girl: who received her score late in december she blamed her not matching to the fact that by december every program has already made rank lists.. thats not true at all people have officialy scheduled interview in february. I also read another experience that after updating programs about cs results they called on interviews. and emailing programs about updates surely helped.

What helped me though i have to mention is the fact that I do not need visa. It gave me at least 3 interviews.

My CS exam was in a very hectic period just day after residency applications, in the end of hectic month in New York externship. But my long preparation with dedicated friends out of whom everyone passed exam helped me absolutely. otherwise i would fail i was not feeling well on the exam and i have not slept since 3 am when i came to the exam at 9 and after the orientation i was almost functioning at the level of someone after night shift. I made mistakes patients confused me but boldly i did everything in time wrote all notes came out of the room always 3-4 minutes early. and taking exam in Philly is not a point at all . me and other two IMGs it was their second attempts all of us passed exam there.

and i have to add the thing that what was scaring me most in my CV- my Surgical years and experience is one of the things that they point on interviews that works for me.

i just wait and hope for the best.. have to make very serious decisions and am really thinking every minute how to proceed if i am offered prematch next week.

and honestly i do hope to be offered and to have the happiest new year in my 30 years of age. I deserved it.
Hi Tamta
First I must commend how dedicated you are to the forum and to the thread. Your posts have been a great help to me and many others. Thank you so much. You are an inspiration. As I wrote in a PM to you, unfortunately my CS result will be available in December but I, like you took the risk and applied on first day of ERAS. So far I have had 4 acknowledegments and 4 rejections and 0 interviews. I am sure my case is not unique and like many others the survival of my family depends on me matching for the upcoming year.

Question: Should I still email programs to look at my application even though CS is still pending? Are they bothered by these barage of emails? SHould you email through ERAS or other email? What should I state to grab their attention?

Also can you email me your notes please in the event I get an interview? Thank you again. My email is jodiann_chin@yahoo.com

Default The Importance of the Interview

The importance of the interview is not stressed enough for IMGs.

Passing all the steps including CS, working hours and hours on your personal statement are all great accomplishments. Your scores determine WHERE you will get interviews.

According to NRMP program director surveys, the interview is the most important factor in determining WHERE You end up on the match list. This is why nailing the interview is critical. Everyone's application looks really similar. Shining on interview day is the only way to set yourself apart and ensure a match.

Check out our blog posts on the 16 HIGHEST yield interview questions you should absolutely nail - www.residencyinterviewquestions.com/blog. By nailing the most common, you'll be prepared for 95% of the questions you'll be asked.

High Yield - These are questions you should be very well prepared for. 50% of our interviews include one of these questions.
"Tell me 3 strengths."
"Tell me 3 weaknesses."
"Tell me about a time you failed."
"Tell me about a time you made a mistake."
"Tell me your proudest accomplishment."
"Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for the care of a patient."
"Tell me about your medical school."

Medium Yield - Less than 25% of our interviews had one of these questions.
"Tell me about a time you did something unethical."
"Tell me about a time when you had to be a leader."
"Tell me about a time you had to deal with conflict."
"What if you don't match?"
"Who do you look up to?"
"If not medicine, what job would you do?"

Special Situations - These questions WILL likely come up if you have any red flags in your application
"Tell me about what happened on your first Step 1 attempt?"
"Tell me what you have been doing since graduating medical school?"

IMG Specific Questions - These questions would be unique to the IMG candidate.
"Tell me about your medical school training?"
"Why train in United States?"

Low Yield but Tricky - When we were asked these questions, it didn't happen often but it was difficult.
"Tell Me a Joke."
"Tell me about your core values."
"Imaging looking back at your career. What do you think you will regret?"

Out of Left Field
"If you were an animal, what animal would you be?"
"What is your favorite dinosaur?"
"What websites do you visit?"

Answering residency interview questions like an expert can be learned.

Is the interview season over? Can we really expect serious invites in November?

Would we still have a good shot at these programs since we were not their first choice?

only thing I would make sure before interview is have your short story ready: who are you where are y from what you did and what you are going to do.

be prepared for the questions that you have to yourself and that you know is a question in your CV. have enough questions for everyone everything ask same questions, listen to same answers but you ll be amazed how many times you will be asked if you have any questions and the thing is no matter even if you ask simplest thing to a resident: "Would you choose this program again?" he/she will start long talk and say whatever she wants to say, they want to share and show there hospital their experience, so just let them speak.

I would like to say thanks to you for sharing your experience.

Why don't you just post the notes as an attachment here?
This way you wouldn't have to send tens and hundreds of e-mails... and users wouldn't have to share their e-mails online...

Yes. That's in the making as I suggested to Tamta but I also realized there are many personal points in the notes and mention of programs which will have to be edited before. I volunteered to do that and only Tamta can approve but is very busy. Me too. Anyway I will try to help the editing along and get it posted. In the meantime.....

Moni thanks for sending out notes. Night float is not any better.
