Default Contacts.

It just hit me.....

Everyone has contacts. Ok, well a lot of people do. Does this mean that people with contacts are at an advantage even above scores and credentials?

Yes and No

Yes: If you have average scores to slightly below average scores for a program, contacts can help you get anything from an interview to even getting a residency position (the latter most likely only if the contact happens to be the PD and you have a close/personal relationship). This can help overcome obstacles such as year of graduation, what school you went to, grades in med school and possibly even US clinical experience/visa issues

No: If you have multiple attempts and poor clinical/interpersonal skills, the contacts may not be able to help you unless you are very closely related to the PD (such as a parent or close relative). You have to remember that the contact themselves have a reputation to maintain. If you are not a good resident in the program, it reflects poorly on them as well. It also depends on the type of residency program you have contacts with. I have a close family friend who is an assistant residency director at a highly ranked medical school for radiology. He told me that if I was interested in applying to his program, because I go to a caribbean school, he can only help me if I got over a 250 on both step1/2!! He said that unless I achieve stellar scores, he cannot reasonably justify inviting me for an interview to his colleagues when there are many AMGs with research trying to get in as well
