Help Categorical vs Advanced?

Can somebody explain the difference between these 2 types of programs, on which specialties they apply, and how can I know the program I'm applying to is this or that (can't see any of this info in matcharesident.com)?

I'm applying to Radiology with IM as a backup. Heard that I may need to find the prelim IM year on my own, but in other cases, it's included with the Radiology program.

Please advice. I'm running out of time!

Thank you.

Hi, on your eras account in the programs section you will find programs starting pgy1 (ie categorical) or having pgy1 option on the same page to click, and other programs starting pgy2 those are the advanced.
So to apply to advanced programs you will need to apply to prelim IM, transitional or prelim surgery (depending on the program requirements as not all of them may accept preim surgery as pgy1).
Regarding radiology, I gathered all the IMG friendly programs which were interviewing IMGs last season in a list in the link below.
Goodluck

There is no definite distinction as a program can be advanced in one institution and categorical in another ie some programs will offer PGY1 as combo with the program. Some examples include radiology, pathology, anesthesiology, nuclear medicine..
