Last year I was in the same boat as yours. I'd take CS date asap because it's very hard to get it close to June/ July. So you need to fill in application and make a payment now to schedule a date keeping a look at the CS reporting schedule on usmle.org so the results are not later than the time to apply for residency in September. Then i'd start studying for ck and take it around April and CS most probably in May. If I can get CS date earlier then I'd probably go for CS in jan and take step 2 in May/June. And start observership rightaway. June, July and August. At least 3 months. And of course that means I'd try to find and apply for observership soon.

Thanks nixy. One question. Do u recommend 3 months observership or should i spend that time on step 3 prep instead? What looks better on cv?

Observership for sure because you need that to get US LoRs and there are many programs that filter you out if you have no us clinical experience. Also step 3 you can always do right after that like in September or October so by the time you go to interviews in November you have your results back and you can take that along with you to interviews so they can sponsor you h1 visa which is the primary objective of people who go for step 3 before residency. So in your residency application you can tick h1 and j1 visa both but when you go to interviews do show them step 3 result copy and let them you'd prefer h1 visa if given a choice.
