Unhappy Bad News for IMGs, 5000 extra AMGs this year!

I read in the AAMC newsletter that there are going to be 5000 more AMG this year for match. They got admitted in the year 2007 in med school but there is no addition of seats in the residency programs then how is it gonna happen.
will they capture the seats of IMGs? coz anyhow AMG's will be given first preference..is this really true????

so why are so much imgs applying this year if they cant get residencies?????are they wasting their time????

Its all about luck and try .... If you try at least you have some chances ... If you dont try then zero chances ..... By the way you have to take risk in life to fulfill your dream .....

Default but...

But how can imgs even think of taking place of AMGs????AMGs will get their places anyway.
So I think thousands of IMGs are competing for just 200 0r 300 slots..its ridiculous.
They should quit usmle and start preparing for either another country exam or their home country..

bye bye usmle

Last year there were 15 thousands IMGs who entered into residency. So even if your story is true, there's still 10,000 positions, not 200 or 300

7,000 got through the main NRMP match and some 2,000 got through prematch and outside the match, so the total is about 9,000.
So still you have 4,000 positions (if you subtract 5000) not 200 or 300 slots as you incorrectly stated in your previous post.

Moreover, there are dirty community programs that AMGs will never apply for. AMGs pretty much have their own slots and IMGs have their own. So this means the competition will be fierce among AMGs but they won't encroach on the IMG spots because they don't like it.

IMGs have none of their slots .......furthermore, only chance for IMGs is if government increases residency slots.
otherwise no chance for IMGs ...

Please post a link to the source where you have read that there will be 5,000 more US senior applicants to this year's match. Also post an official reference to where it says there will be no increase in residency matching positions this year.

Throughout the last few years there has been many speculations over this issue, however, we did not see any decrease in the number of matching IMGs according to NRMP data in the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

If your sources are correct, then definitely, this means more difficult matching for the IMGs. Nevertheless, it's very difficult to estimate the impact because there are so many factors that influence this issue.

One of the major concerns, is that the US government will be cutting in their spending during the next decade because of the huge US debt. This means that they may cut spending on Medicare which is the funding source for residency programs. But if there will be more US grads then there must be some increase in residency positions to cover the increase in flow.

Most of US med schools have their own residency programs. If they increase the number of students/graduates they should at the same time increase the number of residency slots to compensate for their own students.

I guess you shouldn't be making decisions at this time as I think it's still too early to judge.

Just do your best and apply widely.

We will keep an eye on the NRMP data that will be out in April 2012 and by then we can tell for sure whether this IMG fiasco is true or not.

Good luck to all.

In fact, that article is a GOOD NEWS. It says that there will be great shortage and that training positions should increase, this will definitely include the IMG in the formula as 25% of all current physicians in the US are IMGs.

wrong analysis....
this article says that due to increase number of AMGs compared to 2002 the number of AMGs will increase by 5000 including osteopathic ones in 2012. If number of GME slots remain same they wont need any more AMGs. this doesnt mean 5000 AMGs over 10 years not one year( the increase is incremental each year). In reality since 2007 each year 500 more AMGs apply each year resulting in 2000 additional AMGs in 2011 match as compared to 2007. they expected the osteopathic grads to be 5000 in 2012 while actually its 2500-3000 so increase is below expectation so 3000 AMGs are added not 5000.
Now number of GME posts has increased and compared to 2007 there are 1500 more GME slots in 2011 match. so net imbalance is 1500 AMGs. In 2005 percentage of IMGs was highest in american history. 55 percent approx. which decreased to 39.8 percentage in 2010.( Imy talking about visa requiring IMGs). Now the match rate for AMGs is 94pct and osteopathic grad 71 pct so not all AMGs get match. Rather you can 700-800 AMG and 700-800 osteopathic grad doesnt match leaving these slots vacant for us.
Just last year 650 new slots were added while 500 more AMGs applied to match resulting in more slots available for IMGs. Net result first time in 5 years IMgs match pct increased from 39.8 to 40.9 pct.
The number of prematches has decreased from 2200 in 2007 to 1700 in 2011.
In short the rate of matching hasnt changed much for IMGs. may be 5 out of 10 used to match in 2005 highest in usa history to 4.1 out of 10 last year.
Hope it helps
