Default Surgical Residency USA vs Germany

Hi guys! I am a 2010 medical graduate from Germany. After almost 3 years of residency here in Germany I have to say that I'm really starting to consider the possibility of a surgical residency in the US. The main reason for this is not money or anything in that direction, but the actual surgical training. From my experience so far (same goes for most of my colleagues) surgery in Germany is extremelly hierarchical and inadequate. There may be some exceptions, but I've seen some 4th year residents who are not able to perform even a simple operation on their own, just because they are not given the opportunity to do so.
According to a lot of ppl here its actually normal to be given a proper training and high exposure to surgery AFTER you finish your residency, which btw is longer in Germany than USA.
Now, I am prepared to work day and night, and I dont particularly care about the salary, as long as it is somewhat adequate. But the lack of real training in surgery absolutely drives me mad and dissatisfies me a great deal.
I've just taken the USMLE step 1 with a pretty decent score (I hope). I've also been talking to some of my friends who are currently surgical trainees in the US, and all of them are very satisfied with their program and the surgical exposure they get.

So, the thing is - should I opt for a surgical residency in the US, which would imply completing the step 2 and doing externships and research next year, then hoping for a match, or should I give Germany another try, maybe find a better hospital, and finish my residency here.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to read the post, any advice is really appreciated.

why don't you give it a try, you have nothing to lose, go for step 2 as soon as possible(you are 2010 grad and you start to become an old grad), and give the match a try, if it doesn't work already are a resident in germany and you can return whenever you want. just my opinion.
and me who was considering germany as Plan B for surgery if i didn't suceed to match in US is surgery really that bad in germany ?

It's a hard decision, and only you know the full story behind your situation and you're the best person to make this call.

Go visit the surgery applicants thread and see the kind of CVs people who are getting interviews have and see if you can compare.

It's a long journey, definitely doable if you are a strong applicant, otherwise it's risky. If you have a back-up plan in Germany in case you don't make it, then no real harm done by trying (except some time and money, which in the context of major career decisions is not important).
