Question Applying to both Categorical and Prelim Programs!

When applying to internal medicine residency programs should select them both or only one of them ? and if we select both do we pay for two applications ? and does it affect the chance of being invited since it makes you look like you don't know what you want if you are applying to both ....

It's advised that you don't apply for both of them at the same hospital/university.

Frequently the prelim and the categorical tracks have common faculty members and they may come to realize that you applied for both.

They will not like it, not only because of what you said "disorganized application" but also those who apply for prelim usually target other advanced subspecialties such as dermatology or neurology and they don't usually aim at Internal Medicine as a core career. Therefore, faculty might think that you are just applying everywhere with no particular focus.
