I applying to the match this year and doing step 3 in a couple of months. Many programs sponsor both j1 and h1 visa, can we apply for both j1 and h1 visa to the same program? then who gets to decide which visa i will be accepted on?

Default That will be decided in the Interview

There's no ERAS option about the visa. Just mention that you need Visa sponsorship.

Then the negotiation about the type of visa H1 or J1 comes later on during the interview.

Also, don't try to specify from now. Just leave it open, in case they change their mind later on and decides not to sponsor one of them.

Check your ERAS, I don't have ERAS access.
But as far as I remember, there's isn't such option.
