Bump. I think this could be useful. There's a similar thread on SDN. Those nutjobs are confused as to whether they should rank Hopkins before Duke. We can start our own madhouse here!

Very hard for me. None of this stand out in such a way i could clearly say one is better than the other without going there.

With that said, i have HEARD good things about Forest Hills and McNeal. I didnt interview there so i wouldnt know personally.

I also liked Danbury but the town is a little bit dull.

Isn't the Danbury program affiliated with Yale?

I know Yale system is changing a lot of their community/satellite programs into Yale-New Haven on your degree.

Ok.. what do you guys think about ranking a new program thats "university" but training is primary care mainly? Do you think for fellowships will they look up details or go for prog name? Such as university of state etc?

I don't have much info, But I for example in this situation would start considering location . So for me , I would rank the 2 programs in NYC less than others . this is a personal preference of course, but If you like NYC rank them high. The point is since these programs are kind of same level I would start looking at other factors.

I'd put Rutgers at either 2 or 3 as their Cards is real strong. The Albert Einstein is the main campus right? (Moses Weiler)? Also, I don't know much about Lahey but I'd probably put Jacobi before it (purely based on reputation).

Thanks . Didn't know Rutgers NJMS had such a high reputation, Newark wasn't pleasant and the hospital didn't look too great. I will put it above Buffalo, but Is it really better than UMass and Methodist? Do you think Methodist should be that high or farther down the list.

I put Lahey before Jacobi purely because they had their own Cards fellowships where as Jacobi didn't.

And yes Monte is Moses/Weiler.

Thank you so much!!!

Your top 5 are great actually. You shouldn't have a problem matching in Cards if you go to either of those 5. Albert Einstein is a clear number 1. For the other 4 you have to consider multiple factors. I personally interviewed at NJMS so I can speak for it. Pros - Cards heavy program (Chairman is a Cardiologist) - I think someone matched into Hopkins Cardiology last year, tonnes of research (if you're motivated enough), great PD. Cons - Newark, but there's NYC just nearby. Reputation-wise all 4 are comparable and there's no clear winner. So you need to scan their fellowship match data and trust your gut feeling as to where you would be better trained at what you wanna be. Again, multiple factors.

I'm no expert but since I received help I will give you my personal opinion:

University of Maryland Midtown campus
(should be your #1)Raritan Bay medical center (#2, but not 100% sure)

I don't know anything about the other two.I think they're all equally rated community programs so pick based on location and your gut feeling.

Methodist is really good for cards. They gave plenty in house cards spots.

Monte might be more recognizable but Methodist might me more certain for cards, specifically.

Assuming location isn't a factor for you, which SUNY are you referring to? If it's Upstate I would rank it above UF-Jacksonville, if it's Downstate, I'd rank it below Albany. If it's Stony Brook I'd rank it right below Methodist.

Rutgers above Buffalo and below UMass. Jacobi or Buffalo is a toss up IMO, definitely ahead of Lahey and Pennsy.

Pick whichever program you personally liked the best with the best fellowship matches. I've only heard of Danbury which is solid. Kingsbrook & Coney I would put at the bottom.

You're right they do match very well in cards in-house but this may be either because they love it there (I loved it myself!) or because they can't get in anywhere else.

I got very mixed advise on where to place Methodist on the list. Some told me to put it #2 and some told me all the way below Jacobi/Buffalo.

I just hope I'm not doing the wrong choice by putting it above UMass...putting it above Monte might be a tad too much.

I also received Baystate medical center/Tufts but didn't include it on the list, probably will rank it last. What do you think?

Someone asked about my credentials:
Step 1 230s, Step 2 240s, 4 publications. Non-US IMG (recent graduate)

We have similar programs.

I personally didn't think Jacobi was that great...I would put it somewhere between 5-7. But that's just my opinion after visiting.

Thanks!
I am worried to put Jacobi that high ...they don't have a Cards fellowship and Lahey does, interventional too. Do you think I should still put it higher than Lahey? I might put it below Buffalo just because Buffalo has it's own cards fellowship.

I also got Baystate/Tufts but forgot to put it in the list. Where would it go in my list? It also has a Cards fellowship. I was thinking still at the end (either before or after Pennsy).

So do you think Jacobi/Buffalo>Lahey>Pennsy/Baystate?

I had 1 month of elective. I think the most important thing for those programs is to prove you are into research.

PM if you have any other questions so we can keep this thread for help with ranking only.

It's a university program with good clinical training, Syracuse isn't the best place to live if you don't like the cold though. There's all the fellowship opportunities. I know Upstate is known to be stronger in Heme/Onc & Pulm/Crit, but weak in Cards. So it also depends if and which fellowships you are looking to pursue.

Honestly I think it's a toss up between Upstate and UF-Jacksonville which is a great univ-affliated program. I friend in that program that really likes it. If you rather live in Jacksonville it wouldn't be bad to rank it above Upstate in my opinion either.

Jacobi doesn't have it's own fellowships, but matches well into other fellowships every year, and it's affliation with Einstein is pretty close. Also I think Jacobi/Lahey/Pennsy/Baystate is a toss up and really depends on personal preference and where you wanna live. The top 5 I listed below is pretty solid & should be set that way.

This is how I would rank it:

1) Albert Einstein-Montefiore
2) Methodist-Houston
3) UMass
4) Rutgers NJMS
5) Buffalo/Jacobi

Honestly a lot of the programs are so similar you should just pick where you personally see yourself the happiest and can reach your max potential throughout the 3 years to get a good fellowship spot instead of nitpicking which has a slightly better name, because it really isn't as important in my opinion. It's where you see yourself the happiest to go to work everyday so you'll perform well.

Default Ranking

OK since many people are chipping in, I can use some opinion too!

1. University of Alabama at Birmingham
2. University of Connecticut
3. Rutgers NJMS
4. Mt. Sinai/St. Luke's Roosevelt
5. SUNY Upstate
6. University of Missouri at Kansas City
7. Allegheny General Hospital
8. University of Toledo
9. Cook County

Future plans: Cardiology.

I'm yet to interview at a few of these places so this is a very tentative list. Also, I understand this is a personal decision but rational opinions always help a lot! Thanks.

1-5 is how I would rank. 6-9 is interchangeable.

The idea of match is you will be paired with the highest program on your list that also rank you high.

Programs will only rank those they interviewed. Although you can list whatever program you want, it will be of no use if the programs don't rank you.

So in short: no.

Applying by 31st Dec is way way late. You may stand a good chance next cycle with all your application ready on time. Good luck.

I think SLR should still be above UMass (doesn't matter if it's university program or not). And CCF above UT Houston.

I think UBuffalo is definitely too high (unless you have a good reason, i.e. family there or couples matching...etc). Any reason? It should be before/after Jacobi (Jacobi does better with Cards). Huge mistake to think that it's better than Arkansas or Missouri.

And after long research about UMass it seems that they don't really do that well for Cards...for the huge number of residents they have they only matched 2... (but decent for GI just recently), however they very very very rarely take any IMGs for those fellowships in-house (where you would have the best chance). Also seems like they want you to do chief year first before getting a fellowship. So I might put it below Arkansas and Missouri if I were you.

What was your opinions on these two programs? I'm interested to know.

I have a pretty close buddy who is a pgy2 at downstate who told me he wished he had ranked other programs higher so that was a red flag for me to begin with.

from my experience and a couple other people's during this year's interview trail, none of them had good things to say about their experience there. when i asked an intern there about her experience so far, she said she spends the entire night drawing blood sometimes at kings county, & also wouldn't "model" her patient care after any of the attending there. too many red flags.

i really liked the PD at NYHQ and had a good interview experience there, very friendly residents & seemed like they get trained well clinically in a non-malignant atmosphere. good ancillary support for NYC standards. all the major fellowships available as well. Just my opinion.

You make a really good point and I agree with all you said about NYHQ. The only reason why I'm considering SUNY is that it is a university program with slightly better fellowship opportunities (like GI or cardio), but then again it does have quite a lot of red flags...

I was in a similar thought process. Based on what my buddy told me, the cardio department does favor in-house applicants. However he said it's a huge class and everyone wants to do cardio so the competition is very high, a few that don't get in-house cardio are able to go somewhere else in NY, the rest do hospitalist. He was saying cardio is hard to get outside of NY.

The GI dept use to favor in-house applicants a few years back, but now doesn't, he said they take 1-2 per year max from in-house then fill the rest externally.

For me personally, it was just too many red flags from people I know & talking to their residents on interview day, to rank it above programs I like & had good experiences with.

I would keep it like this bro. It looks great!
If you liked Western Reserve, put it up more. It is about how much you liked the program the most!

Good luck.

Buffalo > Albany but not by much, purely based on rep & the PD there

It's a better hospital in general, affiliated w/ Sinai - students and residents rotate from there through, more reputable PD, resident quality is better as well

Hey Inderoll, one more question, would you rank a univ affiliated community program higher to a university program if there are better fellowship prospects in the former? This is specifically regarding MedStar washington hospital center Vs Univ of Buffalo. Thanks a lot

Yes always rank where you feel you'll be happy & thrive the most. This is especially true when the programs are similar in strength such as medstar wash & buffalo. go with your gut between the two.

reputation only comes into play when there's a significant difference between 2 programs.

Vegas for sure. Better on many aspects. They accept good number of candidates. Talk about life style too. If I had Vegas on my list then it will for sure be number 1.

Hi everyone,

I am interested in going into Heme/Onc. I have a preference for NYC because of my wife's job.

My current ranking:
1. Albert Einstein - Montefiore (Moses & Weiler)
2. Mount Sinai - St. Luke's Roosevelt
3. Jacobi Medical Center
4. Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia
5. Bridgeport Hospital in CT (Yale-affiliated)
6. Lutheran Hospital (Brooklyn, recently bought by NYU)
7. Atlantic Health (Morristown)
8. Englewood Hospital (Mount Sinai-affiliated)
9. Saint Peter's (Rutgers/Robertwood Johnson-affiliated)
10. New York Medical College (Metropolitan)
11. St. Vincent's Medical Center in CT
12. Seton Hall (Trinitas) in NJ

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!
