University based residency programs generally more geared toward teaching, research, and academia.

Community based residency programs generally more geared toward providing clinical service.

University based residency programs are generally more competitive and more prestigious and more eye-catching in your CV.

It's easier to get into fellowship after University residency than in the case of community programs. Specially in Univ. programs when they themselves have fellowship opportunities.

Most community based programs have some form of affiliation with a University.

These are just general guidelines, and there are many exceptions.

For example Cleveland Clinic is considered a community based hospital (in the strict sense of the definition), however, it's one of the most prestigious programs in the country.

If you ask a US doctor who has been practicing for several years, he/she will tell you that it does not really matter where you do your residency, it matters what you do during residency. Like for example, if you are active enough, you can do research publication and get into the best fellowship even if you do residency in the worst community based program.

Yes, it is.
I think they just recently started a med school (very small one). But they were very famous even before that med school.

What I meant, is that there are community hospitals that are really great.

Another example, Oakland's Children's Hospital in Oakland California. It's not a University. Yet, it's one of the most prestigious pediatric residency programs in the whole nation.
