Default Advice! step 3 before Sept 15th??

Hello all!
I know everyone's waiting for the match in March. I hope everyone gets in!
I really need advice here. I am done with step 1. Just started my ck prep. Planning on giving CK in April. Now this is regarding CS. If I give CS before May 23 then I get the results by August, meaning I'll have time to give step 3. If after May 23 then I get the results by September 9th. So should I try to squeeze in CS in May ? How important/advantageous is having step 3 score at the time of application ie sept 15th?
I really hope you guys can help me out. Squeezed for time here.

I will only address step 3.

Step 3 is not important if you have solid scores in the other exams. You can get tons of interviews without it, although SOME programs might consider it important, the vast majority doesn't expect you to have it.

If there's time, and you are 100% sure you can pass it without failing, do it. Failing step 3 is a huge red flag btw. Otherwise just be sure to have s1-ck-cs passed before September 15th.

Thank you for the reply drivenby! You have been of much help. I think I should focus more on getting a good Ck score than trying to squeeze in step 3.

I am sorry, there is a correction to my above post. If I give Cs by May 23- result between June 24 and July 22. If I give Cs from May 24-July 11, then I get the result between August 12 and September 9.

Just FYI, to apply for. Step 3 you must be ECFMG certified. When I took it last year the last date to register for old step 3 was July 18. Took mine on early Sept. For result back Oct 1st. So for those you wanted to clear step 3 before Sept 15, check when is the last registration and make sure you are certified by that time.

As for how helpful it is, it's a plus if you aim for H1b. Other than that, seems not helping much. Unless, as driven by mentioned, if you have something to make up in your credential, eg low scores, yog.

Good luck.

Hey guys, I have near the same question. I am IMG who need H1b visa. Can I go to match without step3, but pass it during matching process?

You need to check the reporting schedule. Usually programs that sponsor h1b have certain deadline to submit your Step 3 result. If your reporting schedule fell within the programs time frame, then no problem.

The thing with 2015 match was usmle implemented new step 3 since october. Earliest result of the new exam will be released on April 2015. So that is past most programs timeline which is around February/March.

Okay! Thank you. I was aware of being Ecfmg certified but I did not know about the last date of registration being in July. I will need an H1b visa. But for that can I complete my step 3 by the interview season instead of by September 15th? What I mean to say is that if step 3 helps with getting a visa mainly then I can have it by the time of the interviews right ?
My step 1 score is 242 and Yog is 2013. Will I get less interviews due to a lack of step 3 score?

Yes you can. As long as the reporting schedule falls within programs required deadline. How do you know the deadline? Check each programs website or ask during IV.

I don't think it will.

Definitely LoR. Step 3 is additional. Good LoR is indispensable to land you interviews.

Yeah, you can't even apply without 2 LOR's.. or at least they won't even check your application.
