Default Matched IMGs thread 2015

Let's make it like a poll
Everyone who matched share credentials, interview numbers and match result
Good luck to everyone!

There is no SOAP for us we have to Match! and our Match day is March 16!

as my friend said today after receiving SOAP FAQ email: only SOAP I know is in my Bath

Good luck everyone!

what's the problem with PreMatch? They aren't good programs?

Good is relative, ALL programs either Uni Vs Community, Prematch Vs Match, Predominantly IMG's Vs AMG's, follow the ACGME requirements including the work load expected (not exceeding 80 or 85 hrs per wk), didactics, exam preparation etc,
so whats the difference?
in terms of hospital setting: new facilities , VA vs Non VA, numbers of beds, number of referral etc which affects your exposure some programs are predominantly focused on a certain demographical population, others got much of cultural diversity hence boosting your experience.
In terms of research activities some are less others are powerhouses.
Faculty: quantity and quality, resident / faculty ratio etc hence mentorship.
Location big vs small city, urban vs rural etc
atmosphere: diverse in terms of ethnicity background, cultural vs predominant one directional culture.

These are small portions of what major factors that you need to test before taking a decision, so the take away message its all about whats good for YOU.

Prematch means securing your position early, sometimes on the expense of these factors stated above.

some programs are really malignant of what i have hear . especially in NY. My prematch was really good one. its different and personal why I went through match. I m pretty sure I will get to a very good program.

It would be harder for me to send match withdrawal emails to couple programs than to refuse prematch honestly

if I didnot have that one special program I would without a doubt 100% go with prematch. there is no malignant etc balbalbla for IMGs. we dont have the luxury. and neighborhood bad and good are everywhere and for hospitals i guess the best ones are in worse neighborhoods. its not a deal. you always can drive and park in hospital parking lot. depends of course.

NO I am Pending GC. I mentioned that 4-5 interviews where to the programs that didnot grant visa. meaning i got those cause i don;t need visa. and almost most of the programs i received emails after emailing them. and check that vacancy site often sometimes preliminary intern years do pop out there.

Family Medicine is softer version of IM. Less competitive applicants, with failures, more YOGs etc. lower scores apply and do get interviews there.
options are y can do geriatrics, sports med, you can even work as hospitalist but again what i saw is they almost have no power of admitting severe pts. and i don't know for me it would be too soft specialty so to say. but again you can make money in primary care if your smart and if you dont mind outpatient work. And i have interviewed at the best FM program out there. one of the best.
again if you have money apply everywhere.
and my advice is dont even go and look for program requirements i dont fulfill any program that i have interviewed with all the requirements.
I applied everywhere in NY and NJ, here and there CT, PA got most interviews in NY NJ. so just choose the region and apply everywhere. and email all of them starting from October. last year I thought december getting CS would be too late but trust me they interview util february. and lot of people cancel interviews december, january..

Default Matched Psych!

Applied to 128 Psych programs on October 1st (stupid, I know - but apparently it wasn't that detrimental to my application overall). Got 6 IVs, which included 1 prematch (didn't get an offer and wasn't sad about it)

214/233/CS pass/2011 (no attempts), YOG 2011, don't need visa
3months US externship (private hospitals), 1 publication (not Psych)

Matched in categorical IM

- Tamta are we celebrating this weekend, right??????

I applied to 110 programs, only in NY, NJ, CT, PA + a few in MA & Chicago. I have got 17 IVs (5 were prematch, I went to 2 of these), ranked all the programs in NMRP, so 12....

My credentials are below - I also passed step 3 (217) at the end of september.

Default email from GBMC

Any of the matched applicants got an email from GBMC asking about the iCOMPARE survey? They said it was to see if the program participating the study had a effect on the ranking process and it was completely voluntary and anonymous. Wondering why I'm getting the email now and if this means I matched there?? (I really really hope not lol)

@Bird
With those scores, you're certainly a strong candidate for IM!
If I were you, now I'd start paying attention to other details, like a very well written PS and strong LORs.
Good luck!!

My credentials are below - I also passed step 3 (217) at the end of september.

Thanks to one of your canceled prematches I have very good friend here Wish you the Best, and I am absolutely positive for matching at the same program with you .

Let's celebrate, we deserved it take my out of this boring New jersey.
We need to celebrate for all those people who said no IMGs match this year!

I got the email too. Just seemed like a general survey for all people interviewed there? (I sure hope so!) Questions didn't make much sense though.

reading residents policies: "Strategic napping, especially after 16 hours of continuous duty and between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., is strongly suggested."
Strategic napping
Anybody has any idea what we could focus on next 3 months? any ideas how you can prepare for residency
except "Strategic" Napping

Hello,
I am new in this forum.
I want to know that shadowing a physician in clinic (university affiliated) is considered as an externship or not.
If I made any mistake please overlook it.

I guess its getting tougher and tougher!!!

But, hard work paid off in the end!

Default I'd like to share my experience for those who've had some bumps in their medical education.

Step 1: 220
Step 2: 236
CS: pass
all first tries.
US citizen, Caribbean school.
Red flag: Was dismissed from my school after 2 years of basic science curriculum and took 2 years off. After taking 2 years off, I was re-admitted to the school and finished my education at the same school. My transcript and MSPE both showed the "dismissed" status. I didn't explain the dismissal in my personal statement but did use the "explain special circumstances" of ERAS to explain my situation. This is something that was brought up at every single one of my interviews. I spent a good amount of time crafting and practicing an explanation of my circumstances that led to this. I felt that most interviewers were satisfied with my response. The red flag may have prevented me from getting interviews but I don't think it hurt me during the interviews.

Applied to 200 IM programs - mostly programs that had previously taken students from my school previously. Got 10 interviews - 3 in October, 3 in November, and 4 in December. Matched at my #2 spot - a university program.

So for those of you who have hit road blocks in their education, fret not. You will get through it and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Haha thanks you're very helpful ! I can't find the dates on myeras account though, looks like it has gone back to the applications state as it was before the match started. Will wait to see on monday I suppose. I didn't know it was negotiable but that would be great.

Matched to my fourth choice, university program Alhamdulillah. I expected to drop from choice one and two but was surprised about three. Especially since they ended up SOAPing almost half of their candidates for the second year in a row. Not sure what I did to not be ranked. But happy with the way things turned out . It's better to end up where you are wanted than where you are only tolerated.
