Default 2015 Unmatched applicants - Internal Medicine

To all those who matched, congratulations.

To all those who did not (like me), let us identify our problems and seek to improve or consider other options.

People who matched - please take the time to give us opinions.

So, my creds are

Step 1 - 231
Step 2 CK - 236
Step 2 CS - pass
Step 3 - 229
All first attempt

YoG - 2011

3 months USCE. 3 US LoRs. 3 home country LoRs.

Applied to 187 programs.
2 interviews.

Did NOT match.

You seem to have a strong application. I can't think why you didn't match

Default the way forward

@mpq357

generally speaking there are a lot of reasons for not matching.. and i m not gonna list each and every one of them cause i m sure u already know them..
why "YOU" didnt match per say, you will sadly never know for sure.. you can make speculations, we all can, but there will be no perfect answer.. however what you can do is work towards the way forward. more USCE, some research and anything else you can lay your hands on to make a stronger app for next cycle. good luck. you have 5 months to go. give it your best.

and as they say "its not going to be easy, but it is going to be worth it"

That is bizzare! I am so sorry to hear that! I really don't know what to tell you. Your CV is perfect, and scores are amazing.

I think your problem may be more technical. Did you put in the right programs, and the right rank order list? Did u have the correct NRMP number, and were the programs able to find you? I can't believe you didn't match with those many interviews. I am sure its something technical, not related to your application.

How were your interviews in general? Did u have problems/trouble in communicating?

Strange! I am sorry to hear that. Your scores are quite good, and your CV is strong. I think maybe your credentials weren't verified, or you put in the wrong list of programs?

How many programs you applied to?

I double checked everything, and I have been checking back my ROL since yesterday to find out what went wrong. I dont have any communication issue, infact a couple of interviewers even praised my verbal skills. And 1 program even emailed me after my interview that you are a very good candidate. I was so confident yesterday morning that i will match. I dont know what to do now. I've lost hope.

Could it have been something in your LORs or application? That would be something to look at, did you maybe upload a late LOR which could have changed their decision.

It should be mentioned that there are a few people each year that don't match with many interviews 10+. You might have been unlucky this year but based on stats and everything you said you have a good chance again.

All my LORs were uploaded well before 15th Sept and were available to programs on the 15th. I applied to almost 100+ programs on the 15th, even with the ERAS server problem. And the rest my wife applied for me the next day. 144 in total.
The only thing i can think of is that i took my Step3 exam on 16th September, a day after i applied to the match and i updated my CV as soon as i got the result. But i dont understand how it can be reason for being unmatched, given that i had my result before all of my interviews.

Sad stories especially @doctor201
My friend also has great scores and got 13 IVs in his ROL, didn't match. I guess Interview skills and language are very important to get matched.
Make sure that you have good MSPE and PS for next match.

Match is also a game of luck.

Hey guys, did not match either. Had one interview and it went great with great post interview emails. Do not need GC

Scores - 208/210/pass(1)/GC
No USCE/ No Pubs/ YOG 2010

I had given up until a few hours ago...
Planning on doing step 3 now and look for observerships which is a big hassle.

Good luck to everyone for 2016 Match

I am sorry man...we just have to move forward from here.

I do not know what specialty to apply to now but I want to stick to IM as I have always wanted.

All the best.

the only reasons I can think of that will result in some of you with very high scores not matching are;
1)you applied/interviewed at competitive university programs.

2)very poor english command.....poor use of English language affects a lot of IMGs. at one of my interviews in NY, I ran into a guy with wonderful scores but he could not communicate because he looked shy and was still learning English. I would not even bother ranking him if I were the PD.

3) poor interview skill......practice, practice, practice guys. practice leads to perfection but don't come off as robots during interviews. learning how to maintain good eye contact, sound confident, smile. good handshake, sit up and walk straight, how to approach questions and how to sound intelligent etc.
good luck guys......your time will definitely come!

did all my clinical in the US, so 72 weeks USCE, graduating this year 2015.

Iv was 3 sessions of 10 minute conversations. For me i felt that it was all about showing the PD that you can fit into the program, and you're generally interested, and you do your homework before you get to the Interview. You CANT come off as shy, you have to show that you're confident, adaptable, personable, good attitude and someone who they can teach.

obviously this is all in my opinion.

My credentials are:

227/228/Pass/205 (All in first attempt)
YOG: 2012. Non-US IMG; need visa
USCE: 2 month observerships at mid-tier universities
Publications: 2 publications. 2 medical blogs. 1 presentation at an international congress. One ongoing research
Home country internship & continuous clinical practice. No gaps in CV
Many volunteer experiences

I applied to 150 IM (Categorical) Programs in Match 2016. I received 2 IVs. One was pre-match (which I was not offered), so I ranked 1 program and ended up not matching. No calls in SOAP.
