Default Preliminary GS [Expert Opinion Please]

Good day! First of all, I want to congratulate all those who matched. To those who didn't, don't be sad! When there's life, there's hope! Keep fighting for your dreams! ^_^

Hello! I'm an IMG from the Philippines, Class 2014, and am currently preparing for my Step 2 CK. I'm already done with my Step 1 but have no scores yet. I'll be taking my Step 2 CS on May and I plan on participating in the 2016 Match.

I have always been fascinated with the nervous system and between Neurology and Neurosurgery, I give Neurosurgery more weight. In my previous thread, I asked about feasibility of taking an easier route (Neurology) before taking a chance in Neurosurgery (hence doing double residencies)... I got different opinions regarding that matter and I want to thank all who replied.

So lately, I have made my peace with taking Neurology instead and I already have a pending observership in New York this coming May 2015. However, what rattled my peace is that I learned that one of my friends got matched in Preliminary GS even if what he really wants is a position in IM. This made me think the possibility of doing a preliminary GS for 2 years, improve my application, and then maybe, I have a shot in Neurosurgery. I know, I know, there's still a chance I won't match, but still, I have a better shot after compared to now.

My questions are:
1. If I do decide to apply for a preliminary GS program, where do I get my LORs? From my professors in GS or my professors in Neurosurgery?
2. Also, how do I write my personal statement or how do I present myself during the interview? Do I tell them that I just want to enter the preliminary program so that I have a better shot in entering a Neurosurgery program or do I pretend that I really want a GS program?

Any additional comment you have are most welcome and thank you in advance for answering my questions!

Philippines

In last year's match only 5 IMGs matched out of 206 positions offered in neurosurg(but yes, it is possible).

I'm a Phil grad too. Matched to preliminary IM last year, and to anesthesiology this year (i've gone through the match 2x). I also applied to 50+ prelim gen surg programs last year. ZERO interviews. PM if you have any questions

Congrats on matching!!
Hi, I have a question: How do the R programs work? What is the difference between R and A? When can you apply to either?
