Default Unmatched to matched

Hi its one of these days when our whole expectant community gets bipolar, for some its never ending euphoria that gets settles when the rigours of residency sets it. For others its the hollow feeling in the pit of the stomach that you get when you get robbed on you payday. Having experienced both of them, i think I have yapping rights.
I am 2009 grad, did anesthesia residency from 2009-2013 (homeland) and in the meantime gave my USMLEES (235/238/first attempt/217). No USCE, 12 pubs (3 research articles), no contacts. Tried for medicine/anesthesia residency and also applied for fellowships. I was lucky that after going unmatched I got Fellowship in anaesthesia in Canada (Univ. of Toronto). Things that I did after getting unmatched.

1. Observership in palliative medicine (through contacts - totally unrelated field but got it because of contacts) in cleveland clinic for 2 months. Got only 1 LOR.i
2. Worked my ass off in my fellowship to get LORs and learn western ways of medicine/ communication.
3. Emailed every pd of anaesthesia for fellowships / residency spot. They offered me research spot with no salary (on tourist visa) and a promise of residency next year.
4. Worked on my interview skills. Tried to inculcate humour in my answers coz my fellowship pd who used to interview Canadians for residency spot told me, its the single most important thing if u wanna leave a lingering impression.
5. Published some more.
6. Did online Stanford uni course in medical stats/ volunteered to assess/ review papers for anaesthesia journals e.g SUNY DOWNSTATE JOURNAL OF NEUROANESTHESIA (emailed them that I wanted to be referee)
7. attended ASA conference that is swarming with PDs.
8. Had a good support system and believed that I will get it and its just matter of time. Had a composite photo of the hospitals I liked as wallpaper in my phone and laptop.
8. Had a plan B (gave AMC exam and passed it)

Sept 15 - applied to 70 Medicine prog (backup) and 16 Anaesthesia
No ivs till October.. emailed all PDs. Applied for ICU trainee in Australia alongside.

Secured ICU trainee (accredited) in OZ, 15th oct got first anesthesia IV (UNIVERSITY prog), Oct last week ( Got 2 IM iv)

Anesthesia IV - First ques PD asked, "tell me a joke".. was ready for it ...hit him with one of the unheard ones and he cracked up...then he asked all generic quest...
told everyone including the residents the same joke, asked them lots of relevant quesTIONS. Interacted WITH OTHER interviewees.

Decided not to give the IM interviews, as I already had ICU trainee in Australia.
I sincerely believed that I will get matched and took the snapshot of the facade of the hospital and placed it as wallpaper on my phone and laptop (sounds crazy )
Kept myself busy with work and decided to block the thoughts bout the outcome.

MATCHED IN ANESTHESIA IN UNI PROGRAM
THERE IS NOT ONLY HOPE FOR OLD GRADS BUT I KNOW FOR SURE THAT IF YOU GET OBSESSED WITH DOING YOUR BEST TO GET MATCHED YOU WILL

Congratulations on your success!
Needed this motivational experience at this time. Currently, I have that same exact hollow feeling you mentioned in the stomach and literally a heart ache and mornings make it worse, when every morning you wake up and realize that you dint make it this time! But life goes on i guess those who match on first time are extremely lucky as their hard work gets paid off but unfortunately for us we have a bit more struggle and work to do.
Good luck with your residency and thank you for the excellent tips.

No. 6 is only to fill gaps on the CV and sometimes people look at it coz its Stanford Univ course. They now offer Cme for the same thing. I learnt how to use stats coz am actively doing research.
Resident who interviewed me, asked about my research activities and I opened up using this stats certificate from Stanford.
Will take 2 weeks to do (1 hour/ day)
PD / program with heavy research might get intrigued..
