Default Failed Couples Match

Hi! 5 days post match and I am still not over the fact that my husband and I didnt match to any position. We were both applying for FM, him also applying for IM and I was applying for Peds.

Our credentials
Mine- 206,220, CS 1st attempt, YOG 2011, 3 mos USCE Permanent Resident, IMG
His- 189,204 CS 2nd attempt, YOG 2011, 3 mos USCE, US Citizen

I got 5 IVs, 3 from FM 2 from PEDS. Had to rank only 4 (3 FM, 1peds), because my other Peds IV was prematched. He got 4 IVs as well. all 4 FM.

All the 4 programs were in the same hospital. and now we didnt match. I really dont know what happened. What went wrong and we felt like everything was good during the IVs. and all I can think of is because we did the couples match.

Can anybody give some insight on our situation? we have now decided to apply next year but as individuals. Which breaks my heart more. Dont know what else to think of.

Please advice.

You and your husband have the advantage of not needing visa, and I believe this thing what got you the interviews. But in fact, especially your husband both his scores now are bellow the passing score for both steps and the second attempt on CS makes things even more difficult.

Next year, try to apply as individuals but on the same geographical location, although you maybe ending up working on two different programs, but at least you can live together.

Good luck.

if you dont mind me asking what states did you get interviews in? sometimes it matters if you live in those states or are near them. also do well on your step 3 with more clinical experience and you should have a shot at matching. None of us really know how couple matching works since the data just isn't there for IMGs. I would just try to reapply separately because your partners scores are worse than yours.

I got 2 from Texas, both Univ programs, then 3 from NY. Didnt get any from IL since we live there. yup even the stats for NRMP they just show that there is a good outcome but I dont know how much percentage are from IMGs.

anyway thank you for your advice and for your reply!

Sorry you guys didn't match! Did you guys rank all possible combinations on NRMP?

If you each had 4 interviews your rank order list should have been 24 combinations long, for your chances to be exactly the same as if both of you were applying by yourselves.

Sure. Once you log in to NRMP you have the opportunity to register as a couple. It costs $15 extra. Then you and your partner have to create a ROL (rank order list) together.

If you had 4 interviews, and your partner had 4 interviews, your list should look something like this (using hypothetical 4 programs in 4 cities):

You Your partner
1) Program A (in NY) Program A (in NY)
2) Program B (in chicago) Program B (in chicago)
3) Program C (in baltimore) Program C (in baltimore)
4) Program D (in boston) Program D (in boston)

The above combinations are the best case scenarios. These combinations will let you both match together in the same city.

5) Program A Program B
6) Program A Program C
7) Program A Program D
8) Program B Program A
9) Program B Program D
10) Program B Program C
11) Program C Program D
12) Program C Program A
13) Program C Program B
14) Program D Program A
15) Program D Program B
16) Program D Program C

Combinations 5-16 are less than ideal, as you both will be in different cities.. but you both get to match and have jobs.

17) Program A Unmatched
18) Program B Unmatched
19) Program C Unmatched
20) Program D Unmatched
21) Unmatched Program A
22) Unmatched Program B
23) Unmatched Program C
24) Unmatched Program D

Combinations 17-24 are unpleasant to think about. Only one of you matches in these combinations, but its still better than both going unmatched.

If you rank your programs in the above manner, the odds of each of you matching will be exactly the same as if you were applying by yourselves.

Hope that helped! Let me know if you have any questions!
