Surgery IMG Surgery Doc coming to the match

my friend is now doing a general surgery residency (home country ) for the 2nd year and he is going to apply for the 2013 match, he will apply for ( G.surgery , Internal medicine and Family medicine ) his scores are ( 90 step 2 ) and ( 99 step 1 ) he is travelling to usa in 2012 for the CS and experience and LORs , so he is concerned about

( and me too ) :

1- Is it wise to apply for surgery with these scores ?

2- if he got interviews in IM or FM , will the 2 years home residency in surgery compromise his application in any of these two specialities esp that he did the MRCS (england ) ?

Hi
Although 90 on step 1 is not great for surgery, however experience back home do count and can help.
Experience in surgery or any other clinical specialty back home will make your application stronger even in IM anf FM. Try to get some observerships to make your chances better.

Step 1 is more important and I think your position is better now. This is the list of programs giving observerships.

For surgery, contacts is most important!

Also I'm assuming he needs visa, which is already a struggle

You never stated 3 digit score, no one cares about 2 digit score anymore (PDs dont even see it), a 227/99 is not the same as a 251/99.

He should try and get USCE, some fam med doctors actually do some surgeries in rural areas, and assist surgeons in addition to other stuff.
