Correct Answer IMG Angel (2015 Match Rate > 83%!)

Last year approximately 50% of foreign medical graduates successfully matched. IMG Angel is proud to boast that >83% of our applicants matched during 2015!

IMG Angel provides two main services: 1) Total Document Review and 2) Interview Prep

Total Document Review is a thorough editing and review of all application documents including CVs, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. We analyze every document for proper grammar and usage. Written personal statements are available upon request (contingent upon a brief telephone interview).

Interview Prep consists of four 60-minute Skype sessions. Each session continuously improves an applicant's interview technique. The most common feedback from Interview Prep is that applicants feel more confident in their interview approach.

Writing samples and recommendations are available upon request. Please visit imgangel dot com or email info at imgangel dot com.

Default Sample Personal Statement

The below is a sample personal statement (reprinted with permission) from an IMG Angel client that matched to an IM program in New York.

I was born and raised in Cali, Colombia. When I was a child my parents founded a school in Chiminangos, one of Caliís most underserved communities. During this time I became aware of the stark poverty engrossing millions of people. Initially I felt powerless to this overwhelming dilemma. I began to take action in high school when I started a support group for domestic violence victims. The conversations in these groups opened my eyes to an issue that inspired my career choice: the need for improved access to medical care.

I decided to attend medical school in my hometown because I wanted to stay connected to the women I met in the groups. I rotated through various specialties at Universidad Libre in Cali. I worked with phenomenal physicians and residents in a number of departments. I became deeply involved with patients during my internship in the Internal Medicine department at the Rafael Uribe Clinic (a university-affiliated medical institution). Through this experience I gravitated towards internal medicine.

I came to the United States to pursue enhanced training. Upon arrival I fell in love with this country and its wonderful people. Since coming to the US I have participated in a number of externship and volunteer opportunities. I had the fortune of participating in an externship at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Bernie, Maryland. My supervising physician, Dr. Redacted, spent countless hours working with me on best practices for Internal Medicine. He taught me to approach every situation with an open mind. He taught me to ask questions even when the answer appeared evident. He taught me to consider all scenarios so as not to miss the proper diagnosis. One of these lessons transpired with the visit of a patient named James. James had recently spent two weeks vacationing in Colorado. He came to the office complaining of discomfort and warmth in his left cheek. In the examination room we observed a red, tender mass originating from the ramus of the mandible. Subsequent laboratory and radiology testing led to the ordering of a biopsy. The biopsy revealed an abscess which we treated with antibiotics. A limited approach to Jamesís situation may have yielded an incorrect diagnosis. Analyzing every finding and considering various differential diagnoses allowed us to reach the correct end result.

Securing a residency in Internal Medicine is at the forefront of my life. I dream of practicing as an Internist in the United States. I wish to continue to work to improve patient access to medical care. Currently I live with my Aunt and Uncle in Queens, NY. I split my time between research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and night classes. A recent doctorís visit with my aunt reinforced my career path. After hearing her repeatedly complain of fatigue I convinced my aunt to visit a doctor. My aunt speaks limited English and is intimidated by most forms of authority including physicians. I joyfully bridged the gap between her fear and lack of knowledge and the physicianís care and expertise. This story is why I am here. It is why I push myself further every day. It is why I will bring the full force of my efforts to your institution if you grant me the opportunity of a residency. I am both excited and nervous about what lies ahead. I have faith that my drive will carry me through.

The women I met as a teenager may not be aware, but I carry their plight wherever I go. The location and faces may change, but my purpose will remain the same.

Hi Amol,

Your scores are on par with other IMG Angel applicants that have successfully matched, but to be frank we have seen people both match and not match with higher and lower scores. Your scores are only one component. Obviously good USCE is important as well as any research experience. At this stage the clarity and professionalism of your documents (PS, CV, LORs, etc.) will be critical to gaining the attention of program directors. Please feel free to e-mail me your documents at info@imgangel.com and I will be happy to give you some initial feedback at no cost.

Best Regards,

Ben

Obviously being out of med school for an extended period poses a challenge. What I would share with you is that last year we worked with a Colombian grad who graduated in 04', failed step 1, and then ultimately matched to an IM program in the Bronx. What you need is an advocate to effectively tell your story and to help the program directors overcome any concerns about the time since graduation. Please feel free to send us an e-mail at info@imgangel.com and I will give you some feedback about a recommended approach.

Take care,

Ben

Hi GoodMDCrazyWorld,

I have a few more questions before sharing my thoughts:
1) what are your scores?
2) what type of USCE?
3) what specialties interest you?

Obviously your scores are a critical component, but also important is your USCE and areas of interest. As you are likely aware IMG's have a higher probability for success in applying to FM and IM programs versus less common specialties. I am happy to review your current documents and share my initial feedback. Please feel free to send me an e-mail at info@imgangel.com. Two weeks ago I attended my wife's residency graduation ceremony. The program director remarked that she received over 4,000 applications for 28 positions. Think about this as you apply. Try to do everything possible to put yourself in the best position for success. Best of luck and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Ben
