Help Residency & USCE questions

Hey guys. I'm a 3d year med student from Romania, currently studying for step 1. I have a couple of questions I haven't been able to find an answer to:

What does the word categorical imply in general surgery categorical or internal medicine categorical?
Does it mean that you get directly into either general surgery or one of its subspecialities (urology, vascular) or that you finish general surgery and then choose a fellowship in of these?

And, does US clinical experience during my time as a student improve my chances to a future match? I'm trying to find a research position for next summer but I don't really know if it's worth it.

To understand what does categorical mean, read here

For your other question;
Yes, doing USCE while you are a student, significantly increase your chances of being matched into residency.
