I would like to know if anyone knows anything about what type of interview it is? Anything about the program? How do they treat IMG who have YOG older than 5 years?

Hi guys!
I have been disheartened with the amount of invitations I have received. I have 4 so far:

I have 4 as well. Some people have 0. Be thankful that we at least have 4... it only takes 1 to match.

I got my step 3 result yesterday and passed the exam with score of 244. I had 241 and 245 in step 1 and CK. Will updating my step 3 score help in getting any interview calls? I have 5 ivs so far.
Should I call the few programs I think I have a chance to get an interview or is it too late?

Hey tdsbar,

I both rotated and interviewed there. It is a fantastic program, both academically and for the work environment. They did amazingly well on their fellowship match this past Wednesday and almost everyone there goes for competitive fellowships. Getting great research opportunities is very easy because you are in the UPenn system. The program director is super nice and the conferences are outstanding. It is also in a beautiful area, right downtown Philly. Hope that helps ! Congrats on the interview!

Excellent score for step 3. I'm also interested in the materials you used.

Default Oklahoma University HSC IM

Hey guys. I just received an invitation from Oklahoma University HSC IM program. Still cannot believe they are giving me a chance. I was gathering information about the program and I love it. Has anyone been interviewed there this or previous years. Please share your experience here or via private messaging (if prefer so).

What do they ask?
Are there any medical questions?
Anything specific to be prepared for?

Literally any little detail will be highly appreciated!! I want this program very badly. Thank you

What did I tell you, man!? Keep the hope alive!!

I'm sorry I don't have much info about this program, but get in there and show them what a great addition to their team you will be! The places I've interviewed so far don't ask medical questions... it was just a conversation because they already know you're capable of doing medicine. They just need to see that you'll be a good fit for their team.

Good luck

I have my big interview on Monday with my number once choice. May we both do well!

I didn't interview there, but I did a few rotations there as a 3rd year. Most of the IM residents looked miserable. That being said, it will get you licensed and you'll be able to practice in the States...

You can make your own situation, though. Just because others are miserable doesn't mean you need to be!

Good luck on Monday, bro. Destroy them))))

Dear God, when will this torture end so we can finally practice medicine and stop freaking out about stupid scores and invitations. Good luck to everyone. Anyone who goes through this process deserves a lot of respect!!!

Hi guys, will post an update.

IV: maimonides (got this IV just 2 days after my last post, so basically 3 weeks ago)
Rejections: Drexel, JHU-Bayview, University of Buffalo, University of Kansas-Wichita, BIDMC, Lenox Hill, Salem Hospital, VCU, University of Minnesota and Henry Ford Hospital.

So far there has been 3 weeks of straight rejections, almost halfway done with my interviews. Feel bad about rejections, but still, at least I do have a healthy amount of IV's.

Don't lose hope man. I am in the same situation as you but have to remain optimistic. So many people over the last 2 years have matched into programs that sent invitations in December/January.

I was wondering how many of you guys had less than 3 LORs at the time of applying on sept 15th? Just trying to figure out if that had any bearing on the number of IVs i got.

You have only 5 invites??? That's hard to understand since your credentials are excellent. I know people with lower scores who have over 10 invites. How many programs did you apply to and did you apply broadly?? Ie. Community programs as well

I applied to 140 programs, IM only, community programs as well. A little stressed about the number of interviews so far but trying to stay optimistic, know a few people with similar stats who are also have around the same number. I feel alot has to do with the fact that we need a visa.

Any tips on how to get off wait lists?

I know this is a time to be positive for everyone. But I have had the opportunity to talk to a few program directors this season that normally match IMGs. This year, and a trend for the following years, is that many programs are going to slowly weave out FMGs and non-US IMGs (Carib) that don't have scores >250 and minimum of 1 year hands on clerkship.
I would just like to share with you incase people are wondering why this year is getting more competitive.
It's not just scores that matter. These programs simply do not want to deal with Visas or foreign issues when they can accept a US-IMG with lower board scores. It's just easier for them.
It's truly not fair and not how this process should work, but it's the truth.

I emailed programs but that seems useless. 5 is certainly enough to match. Good luck!!

What are everyone's thoughts on calling programs? Have any of you done it? Have you heard anything from current residents about whether or not its effective? If you did call, what exactly did you say?

I called a few programs last month, right after I got my Step 3 result. I basically just said "calling to let you know I recently passed Step 3, very interested in your program, please review my app bla bla bla." The responses were all some variation of "We do not entertain requests to review applications over the phone." I've also sent out around 50 emails, but that didn't get me a single positive response/interview. I'm thinking of giving phone calls another try. Just wanted to know what you guys think.

In my personal experience, 80% of the program's don't respond to calls or emails. When they do they either were some what affiliated with my school in some way or were geographically located near my hometown.

Either way, I can't imagine it ever hurting.

I did email a top program and got an interview the day after. I knew they had a few spots available and thought it was worth to give a try. Fortunately I got the last one.

I sent out emails to 3-4 other programs, but no reply so far.

In sum, shouldn't hurt to send a polite email.

As we all know, this thing is becoming more competitive each year so no surprise to see good credentials with few IVs.

Keep up the hard work, all of us will find a place. You don't need many to match.

OK. it is definitely not so bad as what you mentioned. I know two people applying this year one form India(25 IV's) and one form Pakistan(13 IV's) who got around 10% of interviews for their applications. they had same scores in step1(230's) and CK(250) and both finished step 3(220+) & they both have 4 common interviews.

form what I have seen, its simple:
Step scores get you through the filters set by the programs. But one you are in the list, your profile(PS+LORs+CV) is the one which will get you an interview.

dont settle thinking that its been a hard year for IMGs so my performance is OK.. instead take the opportunity to understand the backlogs in your profile and work on them.

And coming to visa, if its a J1 program, there is nothing significant a program needs to and its sponsored by ECFMG anyways... !!

I think this year is really hard and will be harder just few weeks we have additional factor: current political situation. Do you think it will not affect applicants who will need to get J1 visa?

Hey where are you from? Your stats are almost identical to a friend of mine who also has 5 interviews. I mean its not that people have so much us clinical experience that its compelling to take them otherwise Caribbean grads who are us citizens and natives that I know with 240s and 2 yrs of usce would have more than 3 interviews.

Terrorism in general in paris, california etc. and declaration by some presidential candidates to investigate candidates for visa programs. Some residency programs will plan back up candidate list especially if the are base on IMG who will need visas.

Thanks a lot.
I interviewed there and got a good vibe. The program director was very nice and welcoming. The other faculty I interviewed with was also nice and answered all my questions with a lot of details. The residents all seem happy with the program and they have a good fellowship match rate. The only thing is the area isn't great but it is a quick train ride away from NYC. Have you interviewed there already or are you about to? If not, good luck!

Default wyckoff IV

I dont know how much this will help
Iv at 9:15 arrived at 8:15, stood outside conference room until 10 had breakfast of bagel and juice while faculty came in to give interview you will have 2 separate interviews. BtW there were 25+applicants there at mine. Pd told a separate Candidate that they interviewed 600 people. 16 positions offered. My two interviews were very pleasant. questions from both IV was asked was

1. Where do i see myself in 5 years
2. Why did i go to my medical school
3. Do I like NY
4. What languages do I speak

My interview was painless and one doctor said i was a good fit in the program whatever that means. Other interviewers asked medical questions tho i did not ask what they were. The PD is very friendly. Coordinator had a gregarious personality. Cubandoc i would find a way to say that u speak spanish because they were very interested in that part of my CV. I will entertain other questions. Got a 745 am interview tomorrow at Nassau

70% or more of the patient population at Wyckoff speaks Spanish. you'll be pretty crippled if you don't know how to speak it. The nurses HATE to translate for you. They do have a phone translation service, but it takes a ton of time.

Source: Did my peds and OB rotation up there.

Thank you very much for sharing! Godd bless you! Good luck on your upcoming ivs, and in the match!

[QUOTE=andrew55;963906]Would appreciate feedback from the IV at Nassau too![/QUOTE
I arrive at 730 Am for a 745 start time and the amphitheater is indeed packed though they also have prelim candidates. We are greeted by the chairman of internal medicine and participate in morning report which is very interesting and ended up being GBS. Even the chairman was surprised. Afterwards we are taken upstairs for a wonderful array of food deemed for breakfast. By far, best breakfast I have had. The Pd gives a very thorough presentation on the program and afterwards we are divided by those who will tour and those who will interview. I tour with an intern first and was impressed by the facility because i had low expectations. Its a county hospital and will have a lot of pathology seen in other nyc community programs but they do have 1 GI spot to give as well as renal positions.

I interviewed afterwards by a faculty member. I am from NY so we spoke briefly about that and she asked about my undergrad experience, medical school experience. She asked me why nassau UMC. She asked me about a mission trip i went too. She asked me if i did research (which i havent). she asked be if i had other interviews. She laughed a lot and i got a good vibe from her. It was funny because after every question i asked she would laugh and then answer. I was free to leave andd was gone by 1130 am. So i did not get any medical questions and the program was a pleasure to interview at. They have over 300 residents including other programs and a DO track.

I am not sure but I think he asked them and they said we start offering at the end of January when they finish all the ivs. Mine was last week. I have nothing too.

I had an iv at Bronx Lebanon yesterday. The PD told me that if I was chosen they would call me in 2 weeks. he also told other applicant that if we were not offered a position in 2 weeks, they are closing the application and not reviewing it again.

I think this is more likely. The reason why some programs do prematch is to make sure they fill all their positions by gradually signing contracts before the final match. If you wait until January to offer a prematch you might as well do the normal match. By this time the amount of scared applicants is significantly lower than in early December and the program risks to have unfilled positions left. I personally stopped waiting an offer from Bronx-Leb after the third week.

Hey Brain it has nothing to do with your LORs its the SON if you are canadian. I'm canadian too and this match is seriously rough for us. I was really neurotic too about that stuff and it actually doesn't have any bearing, PDs are just not willing to take the chance that we reach our "quota" and don't match because we can't get a J1. In fact in at a few programs I was if I would be able to finish step 3 in time to get an H1B because the PD thinks its a safer bet than the J1.

Hmm. I'm actually not a Canadian. But yes visa issues sure do mess everything up. I'm just at a loss to understand how i ended up with such few IVs. Trying to make some sense of it

Hey all,

We get asked the question: are there any more interview invites left?

Short answer is: YES! We have candidates that are invited as late as early February. This is dependent on cancellations or other factors (such as emails or phone calls). We do recommend that everyone continue to email programs with updates on their CV/accomplishments.

Ultimately, the more interviews you get increases the chances of matching. By how much? Check out our blog to see our calculations based on NRMP data: http://www.residencyinterviewquestio...icine-programs.
