Hey guys,
Is it possible to get 3 LORs from a 2 month observership? I hear you can only get one a month.

Default Wyckoff Hospital Interviews

Hi. Did anybody interview at Wyckoff yet? Would be great to hear about your experiences. Also, is anybody interviewing there on/around 6th Jan? Thanks.

I would think this would depend on which attendings you work with. I don't think there's a hard limit to how many you can ask for, but make sure you ask for LoRs from people who can actually speak to your abilities as a physician, not just write generic things like "candidate was always on time and friendly."

Congrats Brain15 on your 5th IV.

I am also hoping to get a 5th, and a 6th so on .

Sharing my prince George hosp IV experience: its a nice program. Questions were the usual. Tell them about yourself. No medical qs. I stayed at Largo MD which is 15mins away.

About how many programs email rejection letters: a friend of mine said about 1/3 of programs will email rejections in general..

Hey you guys are amazing rooting for all of you. Interviewed at Brookdale and they popped the big question on the spot. I said yes. We are getting married. Long story short they offered a prematch and i took it. GOD IS GOOD. ALOT OF PEOPLE TOLD ME TO GIVE UP ON MY DREAMS. Now that this hellish facade is over i will go quietly and pop this bottle in the club.

Default Wait Lists?

Hello all!

Does any one have any anecdotal experiences regarding wait lists from previous matches?

A couple of programs that I would love to interview at have sent rejections to others in my group of close friends applying. I haven't heard from these programs yet and hope that I am on some sort of wait list. Unfortunately calls and emails go unanswered.

Any one heard of calls coming in this late or am I just kidding myself?

Happy holidays!

Congrats Habenula! Did the program tell you that you were wait listed or did you figure since you had not received a rejection from them and others had?

Yeah they told me I was waitlisted. It is Hennepin County and they waitlisted early in the season and since that I was waiting for interview.

Huge congratulations DRJECKYLL! on your pre-match! Now take a breather and enjoy the new year.

You have great scores and you are fresh graduate and you must have interviewed well. Dr. Fischer seems to place importance on scores but equally on personality.

I also interviewed at Brookdale, was interviewed by an attending and a resident. Wasn't interviewed by Dr. Fischer. Haven't heard anything after that.

Would you please share your IV experience and the mechanics of the pre match offer? Were you interviewed by Dr. Fischer? Not all the candidates on my interview day were interviewed by Dr. Fischer so not sure how does that worl. I would assume only him could offer the pre-match offer on the spot.

Any idea if all of their spots have been filled? When I interviewed, I came to know that they had filled some but not all. Looking at forums an anecdotal evidence, there are folks who are still interviewing in coming week or so.

That means they probably haven't filled up all their positions.

Again congratulations on your pre-match, wish you the best in your residency. If you don't mind, can you drop me a quick email on letmeinwillya@gmail.com so we may be in touch!

Wait listed in three programs. Haven't heard back from any of them yet. Everytime I call them they say that they will call when there will be cancellations. Looks like there aren't many cancellations this year

I blame the warm winter for a lack of cancellations!

Amkay did the programs tell you that they have waitlisted you or is it an assumption?

Lol. May be you are right. Dang it!!! I am no more happy about the winters being warm now..

One of them sent me an email stating I am wait listed and that was pretty early in the season. The other two told me in a phone call, which I made to check my status. Just like everyone else, I have a few programs I never heard back from, no rejection while they have sent others rejections. I am not counting those as I may not have even passed their initial filters to begin with.

Congratulations TwoStep! I thought the second visits/looks were thing of the past. Or may be it's more program specific. Good luck!

Ha, of course they're scarce! Most programs have already sent out invites to folks that they want. I'm not expecting any more... looks like 4 is gonna be it for me (and that's ok!). Just takes one to match, guys

Hey, I went there to interview a few weeks ago it seems like a very good option they get great fellowships and it has a bad rep, but it's not as bad as people say.

Just a random and probably silly thought..When cancellations occur do they only invite candidates who live nearby? If the address you gave on ERAS is of the West Coast, are you likely to get an IV from the East Coast in case of cancellation?

I assume they have a wait list prepared. I am not sure how much thought they give to location, gut feeling says probably not a lot.

Okk. My thought was that since cancellations often occur at a short notice, they may not take a chance on inviting people who live far away incase they cant make it.

Hi guys
I've 5 programs to rank
I've made up my mind to the first 2 choices, but I need an advice on how I should rank the following programs from 3rd to 5th
Howard University Hospital
Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education
North Florida Regional Medical Center (new program in Gainesville, FL)

I don't care about the location at all. But, I need a competitive fellowship after residency. Cardio mostly

So what is your input?

Is it possible to get competitive fellowships after doing residency from a primary care program like Wright center?

I have been told that its not a problem, as long as you do research, build a rapport and get good letters.

This is how I would rank them,
1. Jacobi: Full access to the Moses Weller( AE main campus) research opportunities, good match. Good clinical training, they work you very hard
2. SLR: If you want Hem/Onc, I would put this 1st due to its relation with MSKCC, otherwise similar as Jacobi with perhaps less
3. Norwalk: affiliated with yale, free housing
4-6 Bridgeport, Danbury, Beaumont (really dont know much about this ones)

Noted. U. Of Toledo is obviously a university program and does have Cardiology and GI so that would be your best bet. Cook county is a large hospital but i dont know about its fellowship match rates. I would keep toledo as number 1 and cook county at 2 but i would probably switch Mac Neal to number 4. Mac Neal is good if you want ID or Nephrology but not if you want to apply for the big 3 in Medicine in addition to Heme/Onc. I dont know much about Hurley.

Thanks Andrews..so now I am kind of sure about Hurley(#4) and MacNeal (#3) rankings based on location etc. Now its between Toledo and Cook County. Both have fellowship options but Toledo residents match in good numbers in in-house fellowships than I think Cook residents does. Cook has large no. of residents (almost 4 times) and same no. of fellowships as Toledo. I am not sure if in-house fellowships are given to cook or the big University programs around.

Makes sense. It's always safer to be at a University program but obviously that depends on the program. Some community programs are better than many University programs. Mac Neal is a good hospital. If i were to move to Chicago i'd probably prefer one that is closer or in DT b/c the area is nicer. Mac Neal seemed far.

I am new to the forum.
Based on the experience of people I got to know here and of my own, you will still get invites based on step scores pending CS.. But CS pending has been pointed out by one program as to why they will not interview me.. A friend of mine was a resident at that program.

Use all the advantages you can get, apply on time with complete results.

My result came out Dec 9th. I applied Oct 7th.
The dilemma was either spend 2000 to apply and risk losing the money if I dont get invites or save the money and risk losing the opportunity.
I received 4 invites and waiting on at least 1 waitlist.

I recommend applying but as i mentioned my dilemma above, the pros is you may get invites, the cons is you risk wasting money coz you application is not "optimal.. I would say optimal if you applied on Sept 15, complete with ecmfg certs, US LORS, USCE etc.

Applying without CS put you at a great disadvantage. Programs start inviting in September and you want to be in the first pick. We are competing with AMGs and it is being said that there are enough to fill all the residency positions. IMGs even have step 3 done already to be competitive. You can have CS before September. Apply now to do exam. See schedule. The CS is not a big deal. With FA alone and a practice partner you can be ready for that exam in 2 weeks. My advice don't apply without CS. I think I was at a great disadvantage. Because it is so competitive you need all the points on your side.

I'd appreciate some other people's feedback, especially about the lower ranking programs because they just all seemed so similar...

These are all IM program. Current aspirations Heme/Onc. I'm Canadian, so I'll have a break between residency and fellowship and so obviously a place that will give me the most exposure or research opportunities would be best.

Current ranking:

SUNY upstate
Maimonides medical center
St. Marys hospital, CT
Jewish hospital Cincinnati, OH
St. Barnabas hospital, NJ
Uni Alabama Montgomery
St. Elizabeth Youngstown
Redmond regional mc, Rome
Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Darby, PA
Mercy St. Vincent Toledo
Bassett medical
Wykcoff Heights

Feedback is very much appreciated!!

Yes, it is possible
They have in house Cardio Fellowship but I don't know if they take their own graduates
Getting into a competitive fellowship is based on research and connections

What factors did you consider when deciding your list? You've ranked St. Mary's quite high. What exactly did you like about the program? I'm asking because I also interviewed there, and I'm unsure as to where to rank it. Thanks.

There isn't anything really. I just rotated there and liked the people. Their fellowship placement this year was actually scary.... So I'm debating putting them that high. I just felt bad cuz everyone knows me so well and knew how much I liked the program while I was there.
.... But you're right, if I didn't know the people I probably wouldn't rank it as high.

What about Bassett? What made you rank it that low?

I am a "gal" not a "dude" but from the stats I may stand corrected. But let's look at the stats then. Of the 30,000 positions available AMGs can fill 25,000 and this is for all specialties. So I would still advise do everything possible to be a highly competitive candidate, this includes applying with CS.

Can you tell me what you thought about your interview day at Cook County? I have an interview coming up. Do you know where residents go for fellowship? They claim an impressive match rate but don't really say where people go.

I would rank them like this:
1. Cook: good clinical training, hard work, good fellowship match, specially for non-competitive fellowship (they recently matched a nephro fellow to MGH). Fellows usually match at UIC or Rush for the non competitive fellowships (endo, ID, nephro, palliative, geriatrics) even with H1B visas. Theres some research opportunities and you get to do aways in rush, uic u.
2. U Toledo: I would put this first only if you want to do cards or gi, and even then I would consider it. But since they do have inhouse fellowship maybe you want to go for the sure thing
3-4 Hurley-McNeal Dont know enough to comment.

ID & Nephro are easy to match in regardless where you go. Some applicants from smaller community programs have matched to Stanford and Johns Hopkins in ID so i don't think that is reason enough to rank a program highly.
