I am very worried. I have many factors against me so far only 5 acknowledgements. 3 Rejections from Billings Clinic, Flushing Hospital and Luke's program in PA. It's depressing. I know out of the 142 programs I applied to statistics show maybe only 5 interviews but my stats may be piled against me. 😢 224/241/pending/2003/IMG/GC holder/no USCE/3LORs - 2 US 1 home country from head of medicine

Got a message from Lincoln med saying that the email they gave was incorrect. But still no confirmation of interview dates. It's weird coz I think most if not all applicants they invited have figured that out and sent their reply to the correct email. So u guys think we should just wait?

Default CS pending is main factor.

I think your CS pending is main factor. Update programs when you passed as soon as possible.

Me too. Looking at the other rejections I guess it's being an IMG and not cos I'm an old graduate.

I really don't know what's wrong. I have 240+ scores, with 5 months electives, YOG: 2015 with ongoing clinical research in one of the most prestigious institutes in the U.S with 4 U.S LoRs, Yet I haven't received a single Interview. Any one in the same boat ?

I know, right?? It lulled me into a false sense of security thinking I'll have at least ten and be fairly certain of matching. Instead I got one rejection all week.

I think you will be ok. You have great credentials. I saw on another forum that their dean said if by Oct. 23 no IVs get in touch with your dean/advisor or the PD. Or use whatever connections you have from your research institutions

I'm tired of pressing refresh...

It appeared there was a lot more action last year!

Competitiveness is increasing exponentially, the glut of new AMG graduates is certainly being felt!

What do you mean, new AMGs?

There is about a 30 percent increase in AMG matriculants in the last ten years without a concurrent equal increase in the number of residency positions. This will be felt the most at the end of the decade, but can be seen anecdotally in many programs by looking at their classes and appreciating less IMGs when comparing PGY3 and newly
Accepted cohort.

While what you are saying is true, I am still not convinced b/c the numbers aren't showing it yet. The total number of IMGs who matched last year only decreased by 50 which isn't a significant decrease. I have also been hearing this same record every year for the past 10 years. It is getting more and more competitive but it is still doable.

btw, just got 10th IV at Mercy in Chicago.

well said. I would like add that even though the number of IMGs who matched decreased by 50, it should also be observed that the number IMG applicants also decreased by 100.

so the % of IMGs matched in the last two years reamained the same.

hello kash_md,

the nrmp match data does not agree with your observation about the increase in the US seniors vs the number of residency positons.

based on the NRMP match data 2015 (Source:Page 17, from http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploa...2015_final.pdf ) , here are some findings

% of increase US seniors form 2005 to 2015: 22.4 %
% of increase Residency positions form 2005 to 2015: 27%

Apart form this, the article mentioned below callas for an increase in the residency positions and says "Concerns remain that residency training programs may not be able to address the estimated shortage of between 46,000 and 90,000 physicians by 2025. And that could jeopardize access to care for patients. "

In fact the data does agree with my observation, I'll break it down for you!

1) If we are going to talk about the number of US seniors lets take into account DO students to get a true picture.

First let us consider the number of DO residency positions

https://natmatch.com/aoairp/stats/2014prgstats.html

about 3000 and 2000 DO students matriculate into them

First year enrollment in 2004 was about about 3308 compared 6336 in 2014
http://www.aacom.org/docs/default-so....pdf?sfvrsn=26 (see figure 4)

Lets say all 3000 DO residencies are filled when the 2013-2014 cohort residency graduates in 2 years. (highly unlikely)

You've got about 3000 DO graduates entering the allopathic match in a best case scenario

Let's compare number of MD AMGs enrolled in 2004 compared to now

3) Number of 2014 Matriculants 20,343
https://www.aamc.org/newsroom/newsre.../10282014.html

4) Enrollment in 2004 just to compare is 16648
https://www.aamc.org/download/310122......acharts.pdf see pg 4

So if I take the 2004 numbers and see what the allopathic and osteopathic graduates did in the match 4 years later (note only looking at PGY1 positions)

see table 2
http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploa...nddata2008.pdf

In 2008 you had a total 14,359 allopathic **applying to PGY1** + 521 US Grad + 1,541 Osteopathic (applying to PGY1)= 16421

So based on the 2014 statistics (see table 2 of 2014 match data) let's estimate in 2017 only 18500 of the 20343 2013 allopathic apply to a PGY1 position, and lets say all the DO positions are filled we'll have about 3000 DOs applying to allopathic PGY1 match positions in 2017, lets say there are 1000 US grads based on trajectory

so you've got 18500 + 3000 + 1000 = 22500 AMG/DO/US applicants to PGY1 positions

that's a 27% increase in ten years in PGY1 AMG/DO/US applicants

Let's look at the number of PGY 1 positions in 2008 = 22,240
Let's look at the number of PGY 1 positions 2014 = 26,678

increase in PGY1 positions from 2008 till now about 17%

There is a significant gap, and those residency positions aren't going to be created in 2 years to make up the gap. Spin it whatever way you want but numbers when understood and calculated properly don't lie. IMGs are facing more competition, and will match in significantly lower numbers in a few years as I said in my original post.

thanks!

Lol all these facts and figures. I suggest we all relax. They are catering to those that they want the most and it is still fairly early. They want AMG's for prestige so it will take a while before our names are called at these respective programs. So do we all agree that october 23rd is the great day of panic. LOL
