Advice needed,

Hey guys, so far I have only one interview!
steps are 222-230, cs pass first attempt
GC, one year in research, 5 months ob., 3 US letters
YOG 2008. Ongoing Postdoc fellow job.

Should I start emailing programs or is it still early for the season? I am freaking out big time!

I would appreciate the insight!

Default Interview Preparation

It is no secret that it becoming more difficult for both graduates of US medical schools and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to match into their preferred specialty and location for residency. In 2015, only 50.9% of IMGs matched. IMGs with US-Citizenship did not fare much better with only a 53.1% match rate.

Over the past 5 years I have had the pleasure of working with many IMGs, whether my attendings or supervising residents at Hospitals affiliated with my medical school (Metropolitan Hospital Center in Manhattan and Westchester Medical Center) or in my capacity as an application advisor to those applying to residency. One thing is clear: international medical graduates are as competent as any domestic medical graduate. The issue is one of opportunity. IMGs are only afforded a few opportunities to display their outstanding and unique skills. Our goal is to help you make the most of every single opportunity.

“Why?” you may ask.

The reason is not just because many of my medical school mentors have been IMGs or that some of my good friends are enrolled or have graduated from an “off-shore” medical schools. I firmly believe that a great physician is more than just board-scores or the location of their medical school.

As a Canadian citizen, I applied to medical schools in US and Canada over THREE application cycles, with well over 50 rejections. I managed to get a total of four interviews over three years, despite good scores and significant research experience. I later learned that the reason behind my lack of success was the inability to effectively communicate my strengths. New York Medical College gave me the opportunity to earn my medical degree. During my time there, I worked tirelessly on learning how to effectively build and represent my strengths. I was rewarded by matching into my first choice for both preliminary and advanced programs (Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dermatology at Northwestern University respectively—arguably two of the top residency programs in the US). I was the first in 8 years from my medical school to match as Mass General and one of few to match at a top-ranked dermatology residency program. While my scores were good, they were not great. More than anything, my success depended on my ability to put together an effective application and develop strong interview skills.

Medical school did not magically transform me into a qualified candidate. I am the same person who barely secured a medical school interview. I took advantage of the opportunity I was given to achieve my potential. I feel that many IMGs are in the same boat and my goal is help you put your best foot forward. Over the past 3 years I have helped numerous candidates successfully enter their medical school and residency programs of choice. However, I have decided to focus primarily on residency applicants and that is why I have teamed up with David and Steve who are two excellent mentors with significant experience working with IMGs at RIQ (Residency Interview Questions). At RIQ alongside interview preparation videos, we provide personalized one-on-one consulting service tailored towards your strengths

Oh ok. I replied to the IV like 9 days ago. I wonder if maybe they are scheduling by month? May I know what month you chose? I chose November. Thanks!

I chose December. So I would assume that they should have done your schedule first. Send them an e-mail and ask them about it. I don't think it would a problem.

Btw, i deeply respect progrаms which send rejections for me
At least that means they treat me like a human, not a set of letters on the screen

OR you could be on a "waiting list" for a couple programs. I guess to keep their options open, some programs don't reject anyone.

Depends if it is the only IV or 1/30.

BIG difference.

I don't want to be philosopher here, but your residency years influence all your medical future, so if you have a choice chose as you will chose all you medical future.

Absolutely.

But you can only choose "your best choice" out of the interviews you get.

I knew someone who graduated from their program recently.

They didn't ask about when my CS result will come out when they sent me the IV invitation email. The invitation email was just an invitation email and only asked regarding preferred IV dates.

I was hesitant to apply because of the "relative" filters mentioned in their website but took a chance, it would be stupid not to apply to a program where you have a contact.. Except probably if program was cleveland clinic . I had a contact there too but didn't try to contact that contact at all .

Hi there

I read this thread so many times, and I was reluctant to participate, but now I want to share my experience too.
237/245/pass all 1st attempt, 2010 YOG, OBS, USCE and Clinical research experience, 2 Pub, visa needed.
5 IV: Texas Tech(amarillo), St Barnabas, St John's, Uni of Central Florida, Oakwood Hospital.

4 Rejections: Baylor, George Washington University, Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Moses and Weiler campuses), St Luke

and few other acknowledgments.
and I just want to take the time to thank everybody who writes here especially the people who writes everyday and provide so much insight about a really blurry process.

I have a question anyone...who should we address when reaching out to the programs, the PD or PC? I have heard proper etiquette is for PC but not sure. Thanks

if you're uncertain, write "to whom it may concern"
that is quite official and polite

I am seeing a lot of variation in terms of interviews and scores.

They aren't necessarily correlating which is interesting...

Yeah, I noticed this since they started sending IVs. Some programs gave IVs to applicants with low scores and few USCE and rejected stellar applicants with 255+ and big USCE. I noticed there is linear correlation though with Visa status. They prefer a moderate applicant with GC rather than a strong applicant who needs Visa.

Sorry for the late reply. Just saw this. I chose the first one.

It isn't necessarily weird. I believe they have already interviewed their American graduates although I can't confirm.

Sorry, I must've got mixed up. I keep reading the old threads and they say it's mid October and mid November that the interviews roll in. Let's keep our spirits up, shall we?

For sure there is going to be a diversity. Programs want that. And there is not all the time a correlation between having great scores and having a great performance as a resident. PDs have seen residents with poor scores that practically perform way better than residents with stellar scores. Stop judging and expecting to have all the interviews. There are also other people out there who also deserve a spot.
