Default 2016 OBGYN residency matching applicants

Hi people,

OBGYN isn't a very popular specialty among IMG, and I'm having a hard time collecting useful/accurate info.
Let's share our experience together, and make the best out of it.

Anyone out there applying for OBGYN residency this year?

I am applying Ob/Gyn this year! I'm a little concerned with how competitive ob/gyn was this year.

I heard it is getting more and more competitive each year. Let's share more information. Where are you staying now? In US?

Step 1 244, took step 2 CS in early May. Will take step 2 CK in early July.
YOG: 2011, worked 2yrs as OBGYN resident.
6 mon USCE,
1 poster, 2 publications, some more projects on hand.
2 LOR so far.
Canadian IMG, need J1/H1b visa.

I heard OBGYN is even competitive for AMGs. I'm applying for as many programs as I can.

Lets keep this thread alive everybody!!!

I was searching on FREIDA for potential programs but the websites don't have much information, especially pertaining to visa sponsorship or USCE requirements. Also, they only seem to accept very few residents each year. I've only researched a few programs so far, so hopefully this won't apply to other programs.

I heard from a friend that most OB/GYN programs want their applicants to have some hands-on experience in OB/GYN beforehand. Is this true?

I think that goes for every program.
Strong LOR, good score, good CONNECTION, some publications is the mandatory elements for competitive specialties, especially when our odds are decreasing (from the most updated match report).

Trying to keep this post alive...
I'll be in NYC starting in August. Doing observership, preparing step 3, and practicing interview for the coming season.
Will anyone around at that time? We could practice high-yield interview questions/step 3 together.

Does anyone know if OB programs usually interview earlier or later in the season?

So I prematched into Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, a categorical position.

According to the latest 2016 match report, this year's applicant number created a new record. Comparing to 2015, although the OBGYN position increased from 1255 to 1265, this year's OBGYN non-US IMG matched number decreased from 55 to 47.

If adding the 4 categorical prematch spots in Bronx Leb, you are competing for 51 positions throughout the states. That's not a large number.
Thus, if you want to succeed the OBGYN match, be prepared for a fierce battle.

Analyzing my situation, the components that secured my position are:
1. Good step score (240+/240+/1st attempt)
2. Strong LOR (big institute titles)
3. Good connections (some of my interviews came from connection)
4. Some research experience, all first author.
5. And of most important, did well on my interviews.

In order to match into a hot specialty, you need a comprehensive package (that's the term most program directors used to describe my file), and know how to demonstrate your strengths on interviews.

If you'd like to, you can start a 2017 OBGYN matching thread, and I will try to answer as many questions as I can before my residency starts.

May the force be with you all.

Thank you Sumashi for the reply.

Can you tell hospitals or programs where I can do observership or externship or any leads for research opportunity ?

Since i am having hard time finding research opportunities, do you recommend places where you have done research?

I am 2006 grad and I have done residency in Pakistan in OB/GYN in 2013. I moved here in USA after marriage and done my step 1 with score of 219. I am trying to get 250+ in step 2.
But I have no USA experience.

OBGYN observerships are very difficult to apply. I got all my observerships via connection. I suggest you first contact the local community hospitals near you. Try as many as possible, because once you got accepted by one, you can go on from there. A couple of my friends did observership in surgery and pediatric in University of Miami, where they provide international observership chances. You might try that out as well.

Most of my researches are from back home, so that might not be an useful information for you.

To be honest with you, your step 1 isn't good for OBGYN, therefore connection is your only way to boost your chance to match.

In recent years OBGYN has become surprisingly competitive. According to the latest match report, the non-US IMG percentage of those who successfully secured an OBGYN spot has decreased in the past few years. During my interviews in 2015, not only I saw AOA students going to interview in community hospitals, but American students with 240-250 step 1 scores and plenty of publications. Therefore I strongly suggest you try securing good connections with community hospitals, where they love people with experience. You also have to have a good personal statement, CV, and try to finish step 3 before the interview season. In that way, you might have a chance.

Good luck!

Default Dr2017

Hi Sumashi,

So, I am an IMG , my scores are not high (207, 224 Cs, All first pass). I do not have any connections to be honest. worked in research for 6 months but waiting to get my name on the publications I participated in (Maternal fetal medicine). I have one year of USCE and passed step 3 as well.

I just want to ask you if there is any hope for me .. how many programs u applies for. what is ur YOG ... I dont want to spend all this money and nothing at the end. I also have one year of residency at ACGME-I accredited program

Hi Sumashi, I have a question. I applied to Bronx Lebanon last year, and according to Frieda AMA website, I met their requirements but didn't get an interview invite. Is there anything particular they favor? Like prior experience, publications, etc?
