You don't have to wait one year.

You can apply for an advanced position starting September 2012 (while you are doing your prelim residency) which means if you get matched into an advanced position then you'll join them on July 2013 right after you finish your prelim year and there will be no gap.

Also, you can apply to categorical programs for the 2013 match (you are not restricted to advanced positions).

Also, I advise you to apply to as many advanced programs as you can and as soon as possible this year, in the hope you get at least one interview so that then you can rank it in your rank order list, this way, you'll be eligible for SOAP (in the case you match only to a prelim year). For more information about this read here

Getting a prelim match is a good start even without advanced matching because it's an authentic official full year of USCE and so your matching the next year becomes much easier. Also, you'll get to make connections with the program where you do prelim and it's highly likely they can take you into a categorical position next year (if not advanced).

Default what about transitional year?

I was offer a transitional year prematch without applying to advanced position, I know at this point it would be nearly impossible to get one advanced spot and that is why I didnt apply to that. On the other hand I had a couple of very good IVs in categorical internal medicine.
This is the only forum where they explain that i wouldnt loose a year if I apply to an advanced or a categorical this year (after the transitional). Since the people that applied to transitional last year (as me) are applying at the same time to advanced positions,,,by the time I apply later this year for a 2013 spot,,,wouldnt those positions be already filled?
This is the best usmle forum on the web, congratulations.
Any information would be highly appreciated
