They do not just prefer GC its going towards US citizens prefered so its Significant.

You do understand this is how they set filters with the Screener Software ERAS has right? So yes its significant.

The California list is not a good authority, California does not visit schools regularly.

Its good to question Program Directors, some said they would not interview FMGs, I know one residency in TN who will not and does not interview FMGs because all NON US Schools are inferior.

Like I said believe what you want. You will anyway...................
When I wrote what I did, I assumed that most people reading the thread had done their research. Recent graduation is significant, I expect anyone applying for a residency in The United States of America to be aware of what they are signing up for.

I understand that they set filters, but again, I expect individuals applying to do their homework. There are multiple sites besides this forum to find information about requirements/expectations.

I agree that California may not be the best authority, but if you were aware of the American political system you would know that most states don't have the resources to individually vet each and every school in the world. Again, this could have been found out by doing your homework. It doesn't matter if California visits frequently, currently the California list is the best because it is followed by several states.

I did NOT want to make this personal, but looking at your post history, it is clear why some programs chose not to select you for an interview. This is not a personal attack. I have no idea who you are and you may have a great personality and be an individual who could be a great doctor, but there are state licensure requirement that you may not meet. I sincerely wish you luck in the match, but I stand by original statment

Ok now you are really acting like a jerk. You are not a physician if you think being a physician stops you from being human. Radioactive have every right to be emotional how ever way he/she wants. I don't know why you are on this forum because you are not helping anybody. You claim to be a resident but have all this time to talk down on every applicant . You had 80 interviews good for you but please don't tell people they are unfit. What's you said to radioactive was very unprofessional . You are only a resident if that's even true and have no authority to tell us how we are suppose to act emotionally. Radioactive is not a premed or first year med student . Radioactive have passed through medical school so I believe radioactive most have faced death or serious scenerio

Thumbs Up Wow you guys are great!!

Hi everybody,
I have just registered here and was reading the thread.
I feel somewhat stupid. How you guys get such a high score on the step 1, I have <200, (didn't help being 7 weeks pregnant at the time of exam but still, 230-250...) Respect!!!

Also congrats on getting interviews!!!

My creds aren't impressive(Step 1 198, CK 214, CS passed) all on the first attempt. Problem is I graduated 2011 and was "stuck" in Europe because my husband is military, I am enrolled in residency here, but this experience doesn't count. Well, now we are looking to go back so I figured I can apply. Never thought it was such an expensive, time consuming, nerve-breaking process.

No interviews yet... But I wish everybody GOOD LUCKI!!!!!

Thumbs Down

why are there so many haters and melodramatic ppl on this forum???? i propose that we have a "Whatsapp" group just for FM, so that only serious ppl who are legitimately participating in this match can contribute to this conversation. its also a good way for us to see whats going on with programs we applied to, since most FM rejections tend to be 'silent'. Let me know if you like the idea, i've seen it done in other forums and if there's such thing already, pls let me know if someone can add me to the group

Thanks!!!

Default 2nd rejection

my first rejection last week was from scotts honor program? it's in arizona?

second rejection was today- univ. of Wyoming-casper. good luck to those who haven't gotten rejected by those programs yet. Hope you get an interview there.

I was feeling nervous so I texted a friend from my old school now in path residency. He told me:

"Expect rejections to come faster than interviews, it's the nature of the system. They reject people until the remaining pool is small enough to start sending invitations."

So I think we're gonna take a few blows before things get better.

I started out years ago trying to help people and through out the years I did. I made a lot of mistakes like posting on forums thinking that people wanted to discuss things, sorry if it has been taken wrong, people may do research and still get it wrong from the wrong sources. Your right, Since you do not know me I wish to go away and pray I match this year, its tougher this year than last for all of us.

God Bless

Signing off for the last time under this ID I've had enough and too old for this foolishness Good luck

BTW this stuff of forming a secrete group is not a good idea and I guess the owners of the forum will not like it too. How do you help people doing this? You only help yourselves Dr's

Hey guys! I am currently studying medicine in Italy. I am a US citizen. I left med school for 2 years because of financial reasons during the pre-medical portion of my MD program. My school hasn't been recognized by the Cali board yet but it is not disapproved. I am supposed to graduate in 2017. I will take another year and a half off to complete USMLE steps and to do clinical rotations to obtain LORs. What are my chances of matching into a FM program if I get high USMLE scores and good LORs? Will those gaps affect my chances negatively?

If what u want to do goes well. Your chances are almost 100%
Good scores

Recent graduate
U will definitely explain in your statement why u left to Italy.
Don't worry u will be fine.

You would not worry at all. Make sure to apply to IM as well. Apply to as many programs as you can afford. If you get 6 + interviews, your match rate will be 99%.

A friend just told me he got 9IVs last year but didn't match. But some got 1 or 3 and matched.
So I can say matching does not depend on number of IVs.

!!!For nsesereso: Thank you so I still have some chances to match even if it took longer for me to graduate? Do I have to mention these gaps in the ECFMG registration and in my personal statement?

I don't know of any column in the ecfmg registration that requires that, but obviously helpful to mention in your personal statement. But in a possitive way. Eg. Despite .... You were unrelenting which geared you up to..... You get me?

I also had to take a break between pre-med and medical school to work due to financial difficulties. I don't think this qualifies for when they ask if you interrupted your medical education. This is pre-med. If you do take a year off between the basic sciences and clinicals in med school, then yea, that's an interruption.

Either way, you had reasons and they should just be explained. That's all. Good luck. You'll be fine.

In Italy it's different. We don't have Pre-med and Med school. It's a 6 years MD program. During the first 2 years and a half we study basic sciences, then we start with clinical subjects . So on my transcript it will appear that it took 8 years for me to graduate instead of 6 (I started med school in 2009 and I will graduate in 2017)!

I'm sorry to add this but this conversation is not suited for this thread, and it has completely hijacked the topic. This thread is reserved for those who have applied to FM for the 2016 match. Please try to make a separate thread that will answer all the questions that you may have about entering the USA as an IMG.

Unhappy

I got an invite from a small program in Illinois. I am so paranoid at the moment so Im sorry this is all I can share. I am starting to get very discouraged. I have applied to over a 100 FM programs and this is my first interview invite, 2 acknowledgments and no rejections so far.

You are right in the mean for those who match at my school for FM, so I wouldn't worry too much. If you still have the same invites by the end of January, then you could start looking for a new career But seriously it's just way too soon, but I wouldn't worry too much since your scores are fine and you don't need a visa.

Default Interview Preparation

It is becoming more difficult for both graduates of US medical schools and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to match into their preferred specialty and location for residency. In 2015, only 50.9% of IMGs matched. IMGs with US-Citizenship did not fare much better with only a 53.1% match rate.

Over the past 5 years I have had the pleasure of working with many IMGs, whether my attendings or supervising residents at Hospitals affiliated with my medical school (Metropolitan Hospital Center in Manhattan and Westchester Medical Center) or in my capacity as an application advisor to those applying to residency. One thing is clear: international medical graduates are as competent as any domestic medical graduate. The issue is one of opportunity. IMGs are only afforded a few opportunities to display their outstanding and unique skills. Our goal is to help you make the most of every single opportunity.

“Why?” you may ask.

The reason is not just because many of my medical school mentors have been IMGs or that some of my good friends are enrolled or have graduated from an “off-shore” medical schools. I firmly believe that a great physician is more than just board-scores or the location of their medical school.

As a Canadian citizen, I applied to medical schools in US and Canada over THREE application cycles, with well over 50 rejections. I managed to get a total of four interviews over three years, despite good scores and significant research experience. I later learned that the reason behind my lack of success was the inability to effectively communicate my strengths. New York Medical College gave me the opportunity to earn my medical degree. During my time there, I worked tirelessly on learning how to effectively build and represent my strengths. I was rewarded by matching into my first choice for both preliminary and advanced programs (Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dermatology at Northwestern University respectively—arguably two of the top residency programs in the US). I was the first in 8 years from my medical school to match as Mass General and one of few to match at a top-ranked dermatology residency program. While my scores were good, they were not great. More than anything, my success depended on my ability to put together an effective application and develop strong interview skills.

Medical school did not magically transform me into a qualified candidate. I am the same person who barely secured a medical school interview. I took advantage of the opportunity I was given to achieve my potential. I feel that many IMGs are in the same boat and my goal is help you put your best foot forward. Over the past 3 years I have helped numerous candidates successfully enter their medical school and residency programs of choice. However, I decided to focus primarily on residency applicants and that is why I have teamed up with David and Steve who are two excellent mentors with significant experience working with IMGs at RIQ (Residency Interview Questions). At RIQ alongside interview preparation videos, we provide personalized one-on-one consulting service tailored towards your strengths
