Default 4,000 applicants. 28 positions.

Two weeks ago I attended my wife's Internal Medicine residency graduation ceremony. During the ceremony the program director commented that she received over 4,000 applications for 28 positions. While this may not be the largest number of applications for a program, I believe the proportion of applicants to residents (more than 142:1) illustrates the level of competition among IMG's for US residency.

Every year around this time I post to the forums to offer my services (www . imgangel . com). Every year I have the opportunity to work with 10-15 applicants to help them achieve their dream. Last year 15 of the 18 IMG Angel applicant matched to a program. Other services exist that I imagine are fully capable of assisting IMG applicants. I bring an advocacy and passion that I believe is truly unique.

Please feel free to visit my site or e-mail me (info @ imgangel .com) if you would like to discuss your situation.

Thanks for reading and good luck to all.

Hi Amol,

We only spoke with her very briefly during the reception. To answer your question I think you want to strike a balance between the personal and the professional. The personal side of your PS will tell the reader who you are. The professional (i.e. academic and clinical) side will speak to your capabilities as a physician. Most people have at least one compelling personal story. I believe the distinguishing factor lies in sharing examples that highlight your clinical acumen. Residents carry a large patient load often with limited resources. They look for people that they believe will perform well in a challenging environment. Sharing past examples of clinical performance is a great way to showcase your experience and your ability to perform under pressure.
