Thanks

Hey guys,

Don't need Visa, US-IMG.

206 (1st attempt)/217 (1st attempt)/CS Score pending (2nd attempt)/2 Years USCE/LoRs from 2 psychiatrists here/YOG 2016

That second attempt is killing my vibe in this whole process. The pending score is apparently for October 7th. You guys think I should wait till CS score comes back to apply.

When should IMGs expect interviews?

I have no idea when we can expect interviews, I'm getting sort of worried. Anyone have any interviews so far besides the guy from ICahn?

I did get one from WashU, but I'm still worried. AMGs are getting IVs by the ton and IMG IM are also getting a lot of IVs

Yes, that is an accurate assessment. I checked SDM and AMGs have tons of interviews. Also my IMG IM friend has about 6 or 7 so far. I checked last year's post on usmle-forums and it seems as though IMGs for psych have to wait quite awhile. I was freaked out but I've relaxed now after seeing IMGs having to wait until the first or second week of October to hear anything at all. Good luck everyone!

Star 2016 Psych residency

hello, I'm not sure why we have to share our profile. I have been following this thread for couple of days now and can't really make sense of what is happening here.
I'm hoping to be able to share my experience and use other doctor's advice in this process.
Just to be part of the group here is my profile:

230/235/ first attempt/ old grad/ need visa/ 3 LOR from U.S/ 6 months U.S psych experience / 6 months research experience/ taking step 3 n Nov

Applied only to 24 program as many programs have the cut off 5 year post grad requirement. haven't got any invite or rejection yet and I'm starting to get nervous. any comments or advise?
BTW. I wish all the IMG's the best of luck. We worked hard to get where we are right now and we all deserve to be matched!

Hey, you don't have to share your profile, I think it just gives us something tangible to compare to/see our relative chances.

Usually in these threads, people post the profile in the very beginning and then start listing interviews. Here I guess we are just attaching it. But anyways, it's up to you if you want to give that info out.

If you look into Matcharesident.com, they might give you more info. I don't want to mislead you, but there is a chance there are a few programs you might be eligible for still. But it is taking a chance for sure. Check out last year's thread similar to Thai one and check YOG for candidates who matched/got interviews from programs, I would do that if i were you to see if there are any programs not following that strict of a cut off

Thanks. I'm just glad I have one or two. I was sweating bullets waiting. I think the lesson to be taken away is that for US imgs it takes a LOT more time because they need to really sit and scrutinize each application. They can't simply filter and hope for the best like they may do in IM. They really need to see that we are interested in psych for the right reasons and that we have a genuine interest. It's easier to invite amgs quickly as their stats MSPEs and scores are very uniform and they know language and desire to pursue psych are genuine. For us, they cannot assume those things because of a lot of IMG applicants seem to apply for psych as a back up? Kind of bugs me because it gives the rest of the genuine applicants this stress of waiting forever. But o well, to each is his/her own.

Good luck everyone, don't stress, the interviews will come, it just takes time for us. Not hearing anything is much better than hearing a lot of rejections. Patience is really a virtue.

Default silence?!

I have not heard anything either. I'm very nervous of course.
Here is the question: would I get rejection from all programs that decided not to give me interviews or rejection letter is a courtesy and not all programs do it?
second question: is it too early to start calling/emailing programs?

thanks a bunch to anyone who has any answer to these.

Don't be worried. The majority of programs will send you a rejection letter. I spoke to a past applicant and he said about 2/3rds or more notify if they reject you. In regards to the other question, I do not know when it would be appropriate. Maybe someone else can shed light on that.

Are schools closed today on Columbus Day or can we expect interview invites? Just to know if I need to obsessively check my email.

Got the Emory rejection too. I had gotten also a Bergen Regional rejection, but it didn't put me off that much. All I heard about it was bad stuff.

It's tough to make something out of this. I've heard very different opinions on when we should expect most interviews. But it seems that most programs have turned a corner now and will invite mostly after cancellations. All we can do is buckle down and cross our fingers for the next couple of months, unfortunately.

Yeah, that was the other rejection I got. Bergen. I hope some are still reviewing and have open spots. I don't feel comfortable waiting for spots to open up. That scares me a lot.

I just read on SDN from one guy that he got most interviews (out of 10) in December so it's not so bad. People will cancel, especially that so many are paranoid and apply for psych as a backup and then cancel when they get too many interviews.

I absolutely hate the fact that people do that, it makes it so much harder for the people genuinely interested in psych to even get reviewed by the committee.

Any IV updates? Come on people, let's keep thsis thread going. It helps us as well as future applicants.

Got a rejection from NYMC-WCR. I called a few programs, and what I got:

OHSU - filled all slots
UNM - filled all slots
Montefiore Albert Einstein - filled all slots

UT Houstin, MCW are still not filled. Unofficial rejection from Mayo (not selected for an interview) and waitlisted in BCM. So yes, calling is actually quite productive.

Question Prep for Next cycle

Hi All,

Congrats and best wishes to all of you who have interviews. Good luck to those of you waiting on interviews too. I am sorry I am derailing this thread a little but as a future applicant to psychiatry (2016), I just wanted to ask a few quick questions about how to strengthen my application and hopefully, other future applicants, who I am certain are following this thread, can learn a few things.

1. What would you do differently if you had one year to prepare?
2. Do you think it's helpful to do paid externship in psychiatry?
3. How did you get your USCE in psychiatry?

Thanks a lot and please keep the interviews updates coming. It keeps me (us) motivated.

Kind regards,
Olsmade

vdisla - I may have hurt my chances this year by applying rather late. I ended up applying in three different phases: Oct 11th, 18th, 28th. I received all of my rejections (7 so far) stating the interview slots were filled. After that; my inbox has been pretty silent. Also, I hear Wayne State has an excellent Psych department, so you should feel good going in. I wish you the best of luck!

Haven't been hearing anything here. I wish that programs had to give you some response. I figure we paid enough money to ERAS that we are at least owed a rejection. 82 programs 0 interviews and 8 rejections.

Hey everyone, sorry for the long delay in posting. I have received a fair share of interviews as well as rejections. I received an invitation today actually. The reason I have not been posting is mostly out of respect for those who haven't received anything yet. I don't exactly see anymore how it helps to keep posting my invites specifically by name and number because I remember when joining this thread, what I wanted to know most importantly was IF people are getting interviews.

So yes, interview invites are coming, very slowly and not often.

Those of you who have not yet heard anything, keep your heads up! I applied to more programs than most and am a US img. I have heard from several people that when we don't hear from programs, we are on waitlists/hold for cancellations. Also I am sure others are still looking through applications. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope you are all well.

Hello all,

I was wondering if any of the visa requiring IMGs here matched this year. I was unable to match despite good credentials, so I would be very glad to see the credentials needed to match into psychiatry.

I am sorry you did not match with good credentials and USCE. One person I know matched into psy with scores in 240s. She matched at the program she did her observership, so I guess networking played a huge role. Could you elaborate what do you think might have gone wrong with your process that would be useful for future applicants?

Hello,

I do believe that number of AMGs+DOs applying to psychiatry was very close to the number of residency positions this year. Many good IMGs were unable to match.

In my case I had only 3 months of psychiatry clinical experience (although in top universities and with good LORs) and English is not my first language. Still, I expected to match with my credentials.
