Default Question about FRIEDA and IMG requirements

In FRIEDA, it shows IMG requirements. The following statement precedes the requirement list: "IMGs should have, among other qualifications, one or more of the following". Then it lists a few things, like ECFMG certification, US citizen, permanent resident, and the numerous VISAs that IMG's have.

Among the many residency programs I checked on FRIEDA, a lot of them have a check mark next to ECFMG certification, US citizen, and permanent resident. This, to me, implies that an IMG with an ECFMG certification may also need to be a US citizen or permanent resident to apply to certain programs. Is that true? If so, I guess that means an IMG (who is not a US citizen or permanent resident) will also have to contact each program to see if they can apply there. Does this sound right?

PS. Do IMG;s require a work permit prior to submitting their application? Or is it okay if the work permit is issued later during the spring or after matching?

Any comments or advice would be appreciated!

Hello,

FRIEDA is not always up to date with current program requirements. Many programs do not update annually on the site. Each program has their own requirements, whether it's having a US citizenship or being ECFMG certified. You will need to call each program to find out. For example, there are programs out there that accept J-1 or H-1 visas or don't require the ECFMG Certificate until you start you residency, rather then at the time of application.

Match A Resident checks with thousands of programs each year to see what their specific requirements are (such as ECFMG certification or visas) which saves you the time of calling each and every program.

If you have more questions about our service or the application process, feel free to call us!

It is depends on which program you eye on. Not every program requires US residentship (green card). Try to search on IMG friendly state such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illnois, etc..
