Default What should I do?

Good day, I'm a Malaysian and currently I'm pursuing my MD in Cuba (University of Medical Science Santiago de Cuba) and I'm graduating next year.

I would like to enter a Internal Medicine residency program in United States.

I havent start my preparation for non of the steps.

I'm in a dilemma right now. I should start prepare for the steps right after my graduation? Or should I work first?

Do please give me some advice...Thank you very much...

Hello,

First of all, don't panic! There will be a lot you need to do as you prepare to apply for US medical residency but you still have time.

First, make yourself familiar with the ECFMG, AAMC (ERAS) and NRMP websites. ECFMG provides support for IMGs. AAMC hosts ERAS which is where you will gather your application and send it to programs. NRMP handles matching you with programs who are interested in you.

Second, start thinking about what specialties you are interested in and seeking out authors for your Letters of Recommendation. You will want to get three specialty-specific letters for each specialty.

Otherwise, make sure you're studying for your USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS. You will need these test scores to get your ECFMG Certification.

That should be enough to get you started. Feel free to call the number below for anything else.

Thank you for the replies...

My main concern is clinical experience...I dont know I should work in a 3rd country as a MO; or should I go United States and join externship/observership/research program...

In the case of 3rd country, I think I have a good chance for CAMC...

In case of United States, there are too much restriction...For instance, I dont know which visa to apply...whether B, F, M or what...A lot program require the score for the steps...I need some guidance regarding this route....

If you would like to pursue a career in the US, we highly suggest doing some US clinical experience which many programs require, and you can get recent Letters of Recommendation out of it as well.

ECFMG can help sponsor a J-1 visa, you can find more information at this link:
http://www.ecfmg.org/evsp/application-online.html
Some US medical residency programs sponsor the H-1B visa, but you will need to find out directly from programs.

In order to get the ECFMG Certificate (which is required by programs) you will need to take Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS, so keep that in mind as well.

Hope this helps!
