Default What are the criteria to determine the strength or credibility of a LOR?

As above.

I had read several resources, they mentioned that the medical board of US will not accept the LOR from private doc, as the student are paying the doc to do the externship or observership. For them, it is the student buying the LOR, the letter does not proof the student's capability.

Moreover, some resources stated that the board does not recognize externship or observership as clinical experience in the US. Their explanation is, student or IMG that did assessment on the patient during externship are illegal as the student or IMG does not own a legal license to practice.

These news really make me anxious. So how can I can a proper LOR or US clinical experience? Does LOR from 3rd country useful?

Program directors look most favorably on LoRs that are:
  • Recent
  • Specialty specific
  • Preferably from US Clinical Experience

That's not to say your LoRs from outside the US wont help you in a pinch, but the strongest LoRs have the criteria above.

Also, there are programs that have a required amount of US Clinical Experience. To our experience, most programs consider externships clinical experience, but most programs would not consider observerships. Programs want to see hands on experience in a institutional setting. LoRs you get from this type of experience will be fine.
