Gen Surg was very competitive last year. Id be ecstatic if I could get a categorical IV.

Where are all the surgeon hopefuls? Hiding in the shadows

228/246/Pass/2016/US IMG/3 submitted publications/1.5 years USCE

Applying to >150 programs in both prelim and categorical. My only concern is I will not graduate until March, there for I am not yet ECFMG certified, anyone know how this affects my chances?

i don't think it will affect your chances. I believe the bigger hurdle to overcome is IMG status. PDs loves AMGs. Although the fact that you are still in medical school is beneficial as a fresh graduate.

id suggest applying for back up specialty. I have similar scores and I have a contingency plan. gen surg is not nice to IMGs. goodluck this year

Default IMG for Prelim

I am a non-US FMG. Trying Urology. Urology is so competitive, so I would not be surprised if I do not get any interviews. I also applied Prelims, but I heard that they are almost reserved for someone who has a connection or some home students. So I am a little stuck here. Any infor or feedback would be appreciated.

My stats:non-US FMG,Step 1 255, Step 2 CK 250, CS passed 1st attempt.

US Experience : 16 weeks in Urology (Observership)

Home Experience:3 years in Urology and Urology research

LORs: 2 US Urologists (Academic), 1 Home Chair

Pubs: First author: 3; non-first author: 6. All in Urology.

Dont worry too much yet, usually AMGs get interviews before IMGs, the previous years most IMGs started to receive invitations in late October.

Question: do you pay separately for prelim vs categorical spots? or you just apply to both spots in same programs how does applying to both categorical and prelim work
