The salaries you mentioned are BEFORE taxes. So after taxes you will end up getting around $45K per year. This means around $2,000 per two weeks.

You can definitely survive with such a salary but you have to live in a down scale apartment and if you have a family with kids it will be really really difficult for you.

Note that am talking about NYC, the situation is much better in every other city.

Yes, that's right.

The biweekly payment is about 15 hundred.

You can live with it but as I said above, you need to live in cheap accommodation and you shouldn't be having a family members to care for.

Is this similar across all residencies/specialties?

Honestly, medical residents don't get paid well in comparison with other age-matched individuals from other fields.

I wonder why that is...

Hey the above info is very helpful!

Can you give an estimate of take home salary, after all the taxes and all, for a pay for $58000, and the program being in NYC?

Ricky got it right. But for some hospitals the weekly net pay is a little lower or a little higher.

if you choose manhattan to live, it will be tough! best is to find somebody and share apartment. if is outside manhattan, you'll be fine. housing makes huge difference in nyc!
