No difference, GC and citizens are preferred partially because programs wont have to go through the headache of sponsoring visas for you

Disclaimer first, I'm not a lawyer and please consult an immigration lawyer for competent advice.

If you received a work permit (aka EAD - Employment Authorization Card), you are legally allowed to work without any restriction in US while your asylum application is pending. Your situation will be similar to someone who applies for green card and received EAD but application for green card is still pending.

On the other hand, this could show the residency program your unique circumstances and your will to better your life in the face of hardships in the home country and taking bold steps (applying for asylum) in the US.

Hope that helps. Again there's residency related advice here and there's legal immigration advice, for latter, don't rely on forums and always confirm with an immigration attorney.
