Default Ortho Residency

I know this has been done to death but I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any insight on how to improve my (severely limited) chances on matching into orthopaedics. I'm a Canadian IMG and just started my third year rotations at a hospital in the US. I'm about to start a radiology poster project on fracture injuries and plan on doing a surgical/ortho research project once that's finished. I scored 253 on step1 and am doing everything I can in order to honour all my rotations and try to get my step2 score up by at least 10pts. I already have a sub-i set up in surgery to try and get closer with some of the orthopods at my hospital for LORs but am just wondering what I should be doing now to maximize my chances. Any advice is appreciated

It is becoming more difficult for both graduates of US medical schools and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to match into their preferred specialty and location for residency. In 2015, only 50.9% of IMGs matched. IMGs with US-Citizenship did not fare much better with only a 53.1% match rate.

Over the past 5 years our team at RIQ had had the pleasure of working with many IMGs, whether our attendings or supervising residents at Hospitals affiliated with our medical schools or in our capacity as an application advisors to those applying to residency. One thing is clear: international medical graduates are as competent as any domestic medical graduate. The issue is one of opportunity. IMGs are only afforded a few opportunities to display their outstanding and unique skills. Our goal is to help you make the most of every single opportunity.

“Why?” you may ask.

The reason is not just because many of our medical school mentors have been IMGs or that some of our good friends are enrolled or have graduated from an “off-shore” medical schools. We firmly believe that a great physician is more than just board-scores or the location of their medical school.

A few words about who I am…

As a Canadian citizen, I applied to medical schools in US and Canada over THREE application cycles, with well over 50 rejections. I managed to only get a total of four interviews over three years, despite good scores and significant research experience. I later learned that the reason behind my lack of success was the inability to effectively communicate my strengths. New York Medical College gave me the opportunity to earn my medical degree. During my time there, I worked tirelessly on learning how to effectively build and represent my strengths. I was rewarded by matching into my first choice for both preliminary and advanced program (Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dermatology at Northwestern University respectively—arguably two of the top residency programs in the US). I was the first in 8 years from my medical school to match as Mass General and one of few to match at a top-ranked dermatology residency program. While my scores were good, they were not great. More than anything, my success depended on my ability to put together an effective application and develop strong interview skills.

Medical school did not magically transform me into a qualified candidate. I am the same person who barely secured a medical school interview. I took advantage of the opportunity I was given to achieve my potential. I feel that many IMGs are in the same boat and my goal is help you put your best foot forward. Over the past 3 years I have helped numerous candidates successfully enter their medical school and residency programs of choice. However, I have decided to focus primarily on residency applicants and that is why I have teamed up with David and Steve who are two excellent mentors with significant experience working with IMGs at RIQ (Residency Interview Questions). At RIQ alongside interview preparation videos, we provide personalized one-on-one consulting service tailored towards your strengths
