Venezuela IMG from Venezuela

Hello there, my name is InÚs, and I'm an IMG from Venezuela, new around the forum.
It has always been my dream to study in the US, I finished Medical School in my country at the end of 2010, December to be precise and spent 2011 working on a rural area as we are legally bound to do here in my country. This year I'm considering to start a study program (Kaplan Medical) to take the Steps. I want to go do a Ob/Gyn Residency. I'm not aiming to get into a top school or anything, I just want a really good Residency Program that will allow me to learn and grow as a professional in the field (unlike those you can find in my coutry). I'm planning on try it on Houston, Tx.

I guess I've wanted some opinion on whether should I start forward this dream or not. A lot of professionals in my country keep telling me that the rate of people that has tried it and came back empty handed is higher than those who have completed it and succeed. They say it's really hard for a IMG to get matched and the feeling of failure is too hard to bare. It is a huge financial sacrifice I'll be doing, I don't come from a whealthy family and I just wonder if it's worth it?
I'm all about studying my butt off there, to get good scores on the steps, find observership, volunteer work, anything...
Is it as horrible for us there? Should I give it a try?
Can anyone give me a good peptalk to get me to do it?

Thank you.

Thumbs Up You can do it

If you get high scores in Step 1 and Step 2 CK from the first attempt and you pass the CS from first attempt and get good US LoRs for a good amount of USCE you can get into Obgyn residency.

Thousands of IMGs have done it before and you can join them.

PS- check the Venezuela tag link at the bottom of the thread

Hi Ines, im also an IMG from Venezuela, my situation is the same, its been a big financial sacrifice but worth every dollar!, I'm applying for this next match of 2013, i have known a lot of Venezuelan doctors who match this year! so don't give up! in venezuela there's a lot of people that talks and don't even know how this process work and everybody has a friend who didn't make (that was my experience) theres a lot of doctors in the country who don't support young doctors on this, so my advice is: make a plan, save money, don't tell anyone....Good luck! you're good because you're fresh do it!
