Default How to explain a failed rotation in otherwise above average student? Interview help.

Hi all, I am an above average student in medical school, but I had gotten an E (complete fail) in a surgical term in my final year of university. I am not sure how to explain to interviewers if I am asked for the reason for that fail.

The real reason for that fail was:
1. my surgical knowledge was not great and was caught not knowing some of the appropriate investigation/management of patients during ward round.
2. the supervisor did not like female students, and did not give us any teaching or support. I saw him total of 4 times during my 6 week rotation.
3. the supervisor likes to mark harshly on all his students (failed 2 students already before me in that year and I was the 3rd within 6 month)

I scored a solid A in my remedial surgical term with a different supervisor. Since then I have passed surgical terms during internship with good review. Now I am fully qualified in Family Medicine in my home country. However, I am moving to USA hence need to re-do residency. D'oh!

It's been 5 years since I graduated, but that black mark is forever on my Medical Student Performance Evaluation. I obviously can't put the blame on anyone but myself, but I don't know how to give an good answer if asked during an residency program interview (looking at internal medicine or psychiatry residency).

Any suggestions on how to answer my failed grade would be greatly appreciated!

Nobody cares about your grades in your home country and if you get asked just come up with BS story that wont make you look bad. The things that matter are your USMLE scores, visa, US experience, YOG, pubs, gaps, LORs ...etc anything you did in India ranks really low on their Care-O-meter so don't give it too much thought
226 (1st)/ 245 (1st)/ Pass (1st)/ step 3: may take/ 5 months Hands on externship/ 5 LORs/ 2012 grad/ no research/ USIMG
