Default Just got my step 1 score back; Any guidance appreciated!

Hello future and current doctors,
I'm a US-IMG currently about to enter my final year of med school in India. I recently took the USMLE step 1 after studying for 4 months and was pretty disappointed with my score of 218 because my NBMEs were in the 230-240 range. I was aiming for a general surgery match but doesn't look likely anymore.

I want to know what to do next to try and mitigate this score, or what you think my chances are for a surgical residency at this point. I've seen a lot of posts with much higher scores aiming for surgery and i know that there's automatic cut offs for many programs with regard to the step 1 score.

No completed research yet (I've only done poster presentations at a couple conferences) but i'll hopefully have 1-2 papers next year. I'm not too sure on how to get them into a US peer reviewed journal though .

No USCE yet either, I've only done poster presentations at a couple conferences. Aiming for an elective during my internship year.

I was also wondering whether to take step 2 in my final year and aim higher to show improvement or defer it till after, because the step 1 score has disheartened me about the prep process. Would having a step 2 score also help in securing USCE?

Any guidance is much appreciated because i'm confused about where to focus my limited time.

Thank you for your help!

Yes, it is. It's a lot more competitive but you can get it if you have over 250 in both steps, recent YOG and publications.
