Default Tip to Connect with the Interviewer

From the interviews I have had so far, I can tell you that I have learned a lot. One of the rules of thumb whenever you are going to meet the next Program Director or the Program Assistants is to try to find common ground. I have experienced sometimes that whenever I am talking to an interviewer, I am not having a REAL conversation. For this, I needed to do something because it gets boring and you can get frustrating by just answering straight questions.
One advise that has been helping me along way, is that I always try to research the interviewers before I go inside the room. For example, one of the Program Directors loved languages. How did I connected with him? When I was younger, I learned how to speak german. So, I used my past experience, my struggles and how I succeeded with hard work as a topic to bring into the table. This allowed me to connect with the PD, and we spent approximately 10 minutes just talking about languages. Finding common ground can be hard at the begining when the only person you’re focused on is yourself. Although interviews are from them to getting to know ourselves, knowing what the other party is thinking or feeling can be a good way to buy your way in. :roll eyes:

i agree 100%. For my first IV i felt it went okayish. I couldnt find much on the PD to really connect with him and the IV was pretty dry. But the next 2 IVs I had lots to talk about with my interviewers, research, common sports interests etc. I thought those IVs were more meaningful and could amount to something compared to the first IV.
