Info Ranking of Medical School for IMG matching

Hi, I need some advice.

Coming from an Ecuadorian and Colombian family I have looked into those two countries to attend Medical School.

Ive narrowed it down to two schools, each considered the best in their respective countries.

While the school in Colombia is ranked in the top 250 in the world, and top 10 in Latin America, the school in Ecuador is ranked top 600+ and top 70 in Latin America.

Given that my end goal is to match with a residency program at UCSD, one of the best in the country, my concern arises in choosing which school to attend given the huge disparity in rankings.

Though I am leaning more towards the university in Ecuador for economic and networking reasons, I am concerned that if by choosing that school over the one in Colombia, I will be passing up an advantage that I may have from graduating from a more prestigious university.

My question is the following: Does that concern have any validity to it? How does graduating school ranking/international recognition affect matching as compared to other factors such as USMLE exam results?

Any and all comments, questions, and thoughts welcome.
Thank you.

Given that it's an international university, your future grades are not nearly as important for the PDs as they'd be if you'd have attended med school in the US. Since they cannot reliably compare two different educational systems, your test scores will be the ones weighing heavily in the application process, irrespective of where you'll be applying in the future. Your scores and your overall application.

One small caveat: if you really want to be at UCSD, find out if any of their current of past residents came from any of these 2 colleges. If there are many coming from one of these, although I doubt it, then the commitee might view positively a future application coming from there. But that still will not be as important as your scores.

Still, if the financial/personal burden isn't that high, and the Colombian school really is that good, why not go there? Just considering your future training as a med student...

I figure you're an American citizen or GC holder, right? American citizenship + good USMLE scores + good LORs + extracurricular activities and you shouldn't have many problems applying to most specialties and programs.

Hi. I agree with VenusSN. Certainly med schools in Colombia have better reputation in Southamerica. But at the moment you apply to residency in USA it will not make any big difference. You will be an IMG more. If you need information about medical schools in Ecuador PM me.
Good Luck

Great information, thanks.

To clarify, I assume the LoRs have to be from American medical doctors/professionals and extracurriular activities have to done in the US, both as opposed to from either Colombia or Ecuador?

On that same note, would foreign LoRs, or extracurriculars hold any weight when applying for U.S. residency?
