You still have chances in IM, you need to work on making your CV stronger by doing USCE. Also apply to FM as backup.

I'll be honest with you. Unless your CV is very impressing and you do very well on Step 2 CK, then your chances aren't that great.

You should do research and try to get publications, in addition to 2 or 3 electives with amazing letters of recommendation, and then of course your medical school standing.

Also, don't underestimate a properly written personal statement.

I don't mean to put you down, but reality sucks.

Hope that helps,

Don't worry man you are fine. I have step 1 216 step 2 230 and I received many IM interviews.

try to get good score in ck and do observer ship. if you can pass step3 after step2ck it will be plus but if you don't its ok also.( I applied without step3)

your score is average not bad at all. don't listen to people make you down the reality here in USA is different. Many chances available. Keep going on.

Don't be disheartened and work on ur CK now.. The only way in life is ahead.. Think about what went wrong for you during your preparation for Step 1 and try to improve on those points. Surely with a great CK score and CS passed in first attempt and possibly also Step 3, your chances will increase. Good luck!

for what i read, for IMGs step 1 and step 2 have almost equal value .and generally step 2 is seen when step 1 score is low ,so u do have good chance for IM. but some programs have filters ,which will not read your application due to low step 1 score .however you do have good chance in mid tier programs ,not the top ones.its is also important that u dint take too much time between step 1& 2 .good luck

P.S -whatever is said was in conclusion to reading this and SDN forum.

Thanks!
I did a FREIDA search of all IM programs and found that mid tier community programs do good with IMG's! I want to apply to community IM and EM programs. I did my step 1 in aug 2010 and step 2 in aug 2011. Does that count as a big gap cuz i'm still a student and was doing the steps in my summer vacations.
Thanks for ur advise!

There has been a change in scoring system .google it to know more,

in short 2 digit score is no longer important its only 3 digit score that matters

Your scores are a bit below average for non-US Grads who match (225/228 in 2011), but you can still do it if you can get some good USCE (with good LOR's) and apply very widely - 150 programs or so.

Let me add that your scores, though below average, are still within the range of what is needed to be called for interview.

Also, use any personal contacts you have to gain introductions and, if possible, write letters on your behalf.

Ed
