Help Help! Done with Step 1 and Step 2 CK, now what?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for chiming in.

I need some orientation, any help would be very much appreciated

Background info
  • I am a US-IMG finishing my third year of Med School in the Caribbean.
  • I am about to begin my rotations (final year of Med School).
  • I have already passed both Step 1 and Step 2 CK on first attempt.
  • I scored a 207/86 on Step 1 and a 246/84 on Step 2 CK (new scoring system).

Here are my questions
  • When is it a good time for me to take the Step 2 CS?
  • What are the requirements to apply for Match?
  • Is there chance for me to apply for Residency through Match/ERAS if I want to get into Residency as soon as I graduate next year (2013)? Or will I be to late?
  • Can I apply for Match only with Step 1 and Step 2 CK Score, or should I go ahead and take the Step 2 CS?
  • What is needed for the ECFMG Certification?
  • Are there Benefits for being ECFMG Certified?

Please, I ask for guidance, any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Hmm, Im a Carrib student aswell, the weird thing is, you took Step 1 & CK Before rotations? That's very odd.

Regardless, generally people say take it when your comfortable and after doing the cores which is probably another 1 year for you since you are just beginning.

What are the requirements to apply for Match?

- ECFMG Certified (Step 1, CK + CS, LoRs, MSPE, Deans Letter etc.)

Is there chance for me to apply for Residency through Match/ERAS if I want to get into Residency as soon as I graduate next year (2013)? Or will I be to late?

- You could technically apply after passing CS, but you wouldn't graduate on time so makes no sense for you.

Can I apply for Match only with Step 1 and Step 2 CK Score, or should I go ahead and take the Step 2 CS?

- You can, but generally a complete application is better.

What is needed for the ECFMG Certification?

- See above

Are there Benefits for being ECFMG Certified?

- See ABove

Do you mind telling me what school you're at?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.

I go to school in the Dominican Republic
Yes, I did take Step 1 and Step 2 CK prior to rotations.
I don't think many people in my school have done so.
I took Step 1 as soon as I finished my second year of school.
Then I studied intensely on my own for 5 months and took the CK.
I only went to classes whenever I had exams.
Classes in my school are NOT USMLE oriented.
I have had to study everything on my own.

What school do you go to?

Wow,,, it caught all my attention that you are from DR, so do i... i went to INTEC, i was not as disciplinary as you, i did step 1 after finishing the med-school and now doing CS /CK at the same time.. getting it done both..

Step 2 CS is a must for the MATCH... even Step 1 and step 2 CS is just enough to enter in to the ERAS, the point of having the other's step ready is to get more points or to get more opportunity to get into Residency program.

Yes, You are more than ready as soon as you take the step 2 CS to apply for the residency program. But you have to complete your Medschool first. For example, if you finish on 2013 ( but get the medical diploma before ) July of 2013, maybe you can apply on 2012...
