Question IMG stigma even after residency

Even after securing residency, does the IMG label hamper your chances of getting into desired subspecialties e.g. cardiology after IM, or is it a level playing field after getting into a residency program?

---Wrong section of forums, sorry. Would be much obliged if a mod could transfer it.

Generally speaking, after you have done residency in USA and got your specialty board, you are at level with AMGs who have done exactly the same (residency and board exam).

However, there are some issues when it comes to fellowships; for example many fellowship programs are not comfortable with J1 Visa, or many IMGs prefer to do a waiver job instead of going for fellowship.

If you don't have a visa problem, such as a citizen or Green card holder, then your chances are no different from AMGs when it comes to fellowship application.

There are other factors also such as publications, subspecialty electives, research, chief resident and other leaderships, ...etc (these factors are the same for AMGs and IMGs).

However, fellowships, are more about "connections" than residency. Therefore, we might have a confounding factor here, AMGs have better University connections than IMGs, and therefore they might get better chances in fellowships, specially competitive specialties such as cardiology.
